36 DECEMBER 2022 By Rachael Bouley You may be asking yourself: what’s a ticktocker? No, it’s not someone involved with the app. It’s not a fun nickname for a clock. It’s an advisory council formed by the National Charity League (NCL) and overseen by Xavier Prep senior Maryn Day. Maryn has been involved with NCL since seventh grade and was selected to join the Advisory Council this fall. Ticktockers are the youngest members of the league, a philanthropy program for mothers and daughters in grades 7-12. The national nonprofit has over 295 chapters in 32 states, including ten local branches across the Valley. Maryn’s passion for making a difference goes back to her elementary school years in Girl Scouts. Many of her fellow troop members joined the NCL, and she was inspired to do the same. “I have always loved charitable work, and this presented a unique opportunity to explore new charities with a group of girls and our mothers,” Maryn said. However, she noticed a gap between activities and the challenges facing the younger girls, which inspired her to apply for a national role. “It allows me to influence change on a broader scale,” she explained. “With the council, I have been working with others to create a core curriculum that embraces inclusion and ensures that all voices are heard. Since we all live in different states, we meet every other week to discuss each pillar of the NCL curriculum and collaborate on how they could be updated to be more relevant.” Working with Ticktockers is a welcome experience for Maryn, who says their main focuses are philanthropy and female leadership. They have a calendar of volunteer opportunities to choose from as each grade level meets monthly to discuss topics like driver safety, finance, nutrition and mental health. Getting the opportunity to volunteer at many different charities helps NCL participants find philanthropies they are passionate about, too. “I plan on majoring in neuroscience and going to medical school to eventually become a pediatric neurologist,” Maryn said. “I became passionate about this through some of the work I have done with children’s charities over the years.” She has taken advantage of leadership and public speaking opportunities. Maryn believes the practical skills learned through league activities allows them to impact their community work significantly. She remembers one of her first volunteer shifts with the league, volunteering at a NourishPHX holiday gift drive where most families only spoke Spanish. “As soon as the volunteer organizers learned I spoke Spanish, I was whisked away to translate. The organizers needed to understand what the parents were asking,” Maryn recalled. “It was so impactful for me to see how I can help the underserved in my community and step into a leadership role, which NCL has certainly prepared me for.” She hopes more mothers and daughters get involved in the league, a bonding experience where they can meet new friends while supporting their communities. “Leading and representing our chapter has been very fulfilling for me and has also allowed me to give back to others less fortunate,” she added. “Our goal is to make sure that the lessons taught in NCL apply to modern girls so they can take these experiences with them into their future lives. It has been amazing to see how we can help shape the organization. I can bring so many ideas that the other members of the Advisory Council share to improve my chapter.” nationalcharityleague.org Local senior named to Ticktocker Advisory Council Xavier Prep senior Maryn Day has been involved with the National Charity League since seventh grade.
