p a i d a d v e r t i s e m e n t Let Us Not Forget What it Means to be Free There I was, a 19 year old punk kid standing in tighty-whities at the foot of my bunk with the 52 other recruits of Charlie Company 1081. It was dark outside, but the yellow glow of the barracks lights were bright. My head was freshly shaved, my arms were locked to my sides, and my gaze was straight ahead as the drill instructor looked me up and down. I was careful not to eyeball him or move an inch, but he could smell the fear. “Blalock! How the f**k did you get in here? You look like you should be at Parris Island with the female recruits!,” yelled SSgt Bull. “Aye, Aye Sir!”, I replied. From that moment on, life was different. I spent the next 4 years working as an administrative and logistical specialist at MCAS Miramar helping Marine Corps families move from one base to another as they changed duty stations. It sounds easier than it really was because the government moves slower than Marines and also because the average Marine family is trying to move themselves in a U-Haul that they rented with a $2,000 allowance from the Marine Corps. Usually, the families would be pulling in to the next duty station on “E” and without any cash reserve if things didn’t go according to plan. It was here that I began my “real estate” training. When I wasn’t working, I was either in the gym or cleaning. In 2009, I was honorably discharged as a Corporal and returned home to finish at ASU with the GI Bill. I like to say that there was my life before the Marine Corps and my life after the Marine Corps. It is very black and white. I can remember the punk kid who wanted to quit college to party and I remember the man who stepped off the base for the last time. The military not only changed my life, but it saved my life and I will forever be indebted to the culture that raised me from 19-23 years old. While I was able to give some, I know many others who gave all. Let us not forget what it means to be free. USA USA USA P.S. - If you have a child or acquaintance who has expressed interest in entering the military or who you believe may benefit from service, feel free to put them in contact with me to discuss their decision and options. I’m always here to advise on any of the branches of service.
