32 NOVEMBER 2022 By Rachael Bouley It all started as a humble passion project and business idea, brought to life by former U.S. Army Green Beret Evan Hafer and friends Jarred Taylor, Richard Ryan and Mat Best. Founded in 2014, Black Rifle Coffee Company (BRCC) is a veteran-owned business that has 21 “Outposts” across Florida, Georgia, Tennessee, Oklahoma, Texas and Utah. The Arcadia Outpost is BRCC’s first in Arizona. Chief Retail Officer Heath Nielsen says it’s been an excellent start for their new location. “The Arcadia community has greeted us with open arms,” Nielsen said. “We are encouraged by the warm welcome we have received and are proud to serve BRCC coffee to Arcadia and the Phoenix community.” The new location is part of a thriving network of Outposts where the company sells its blended roasts in a community- oriented atmosphere. “The founders started the company to connect people who love our country and to give back to our veterans as an employment opportunity and through philanthropy,” Nielsen said. Hafer initially roasted beans in his garage, producing hundreds of pounds of ready-to- ship coffee on a one-pound roaster. While BRCC has grown significantly since then, the team hasn’t forgotten where they came from and what they care about. “At every stage, from garage to going public, the company has prioritized hiring veterans,” Nielsen said. “Currently, about 50 percent of our employees are veterans, about ten times the national average, and our goal is to eventually employ 10,000.” BRCC helps veterans nationwide through a steady stream of events and donation drives. Last year, the company donated over $1.2 million to charitable organizations and $3 million worth of coffee and products to active military and first responder units. The company’s desire to make a difference led to the creation of the BRCC Fund in 2021. This fund supports veterans, law enforcement, first responders, and conservation organizations, including Mettle Ops, HunterSeven Foundation, Back the Heroes, and Folds of Honor. As the business expands, BRCC strives to be the top employer of choice for veterans and first responders. With opportunities for advancement and ongoing training, BRCC wants everyone to feel supported and appreciated at work, no matter their title. “As a veteran myself, I know that the value of veterans in the workplace cannot be overstated. They are the ultimate team players – resourceful, resilient and determined,” Nielsen said. He added that businesses operating with veteran employees have access to the increased wealth of experience and skills that a military background provides. “Our goal as a company is to serve those who have served our country as they enter civilian life,” he said. BRCC Arcadia offers a full espresso bar with more than 15 different blends of coffee, a drive-thru and a grab-and-go menu for breakfast, lunch, and sweets.
