44 OCTOBER 2022 By Mallory Gleich As a youngster, Deb Levine knew she had a gift. It wasn’t something physical; instead, this gift came from her mind. From her intuition. It wasn’t until she got older that she realized she could share this gift with others. Levine is a medium. No, she doesn’t “speak” to the dead. She isn’t a fortune teller, at least in the sense of how that industry is portrayed on television. She recalls her first experience with mediumship: “I could ‘hear’ (subjectively; I did not actually hear a voice in my head or my ear) the voice of an older British woman asking me a question. I couldn’t tell you what it was that she asked, I was so freaked out. I just remember putting my fingers in my ears and saying in my mind, ‘Go away.’ And she did.” Originally from Norristown, Pennsylvania, Levine attended Penn State and got her Bachelors in Advertising, citing that she wanted to be the next Amanda Woodward (a character on the television show Melrose Place ). During her senior year spring break, she and her 85-year-old grandmother flew to Arizona to visit her cousin at ASU. “I fell in love with the sunshine, palm trees, and the fact that it was halfway across the country from where I grew up,” Levine said. “I was ready for a change, so I waited a year after graduating college and made the trek out west. It was only supposed to be for two years – that was 25 years ago.” Levine decided to finally accept her gifts after settling in Phoenix. She opened Soul Wisdom ‘unofficially’ in 2018, doing readings from her bedroom closet before moving into an office space in 2020. She offers private, one- on-one mediumship sessions, public and private group demonstrations, and sound healing meditation events. Levine said that a person doesn’t just become a medium; rather, one IS a medium. She explained that mediumistic “gifts” (the ability to connect with those that have left their physical bodies) cannot actually be taught, but they can be honed. Levine said she has sharpened her skills with the help of trained mediums for the past five years. She also works with her mentor, John Johnson (a Scottish tutor of mediumship and Intuitive Arts) and participates in monthly workshops. Within sessions at Soul Wisdom, Levine is able to connect – or “visit” – with people from her client’s life that have passed – but it’s more an awareness of their spirit. “A ‘visit’ from a spirit is different for every medium. Some people see the deceased objectively, as in, they can actually ‘see’ your deceased grandma standing beside you. I ‘see’ spirit subjectively, in my ‘mind’s eye.’ It’s like picturing a scene from your favorite movie and being able to play it out in your mind,” she said. And if you’re wondering if Levine can see the future, the answer is no…but also yes. Sometimes, she’ll pick up on something in her client’s energy – something that hasn’t happened yet – but that doesn’t mean it actually will happen: “I connect with something within the soul of my client that leads me to feel it could be something they may want to consider. I might encourage them to think about something specific, but it’s up to my client to determine whether they want to take the ball and run with it,” she said. “To tell someone their future would only serve to disempower them. I feel my job is to empower someone on their journey of personal growth and self-healing.” Levine’s hope is that each client leaves with a deeper understanding of themselves; that the session “serves as a mirror of reflection of their own powerful inner light that maybe they haven’t been able to see for a while, or ever.” Soul Wisdom is hosting “An Evening with Spirit” event on October 1 at Shantiful in Old Town. thesoulwisdom.com A rare gift of ‘truth and light’ Deb Levine harnessed her gift of mediumship – connecting with souls no longer living – and shares it through her business, Soul Wisdom.
