38 OCTOBER 2022 By Jennifer Marshall In 1961, the church parishioners of Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Cathedral were searching for ways to raise money for their church. An idea took hold, and the Phoenix Greek Festival – now in its 61st year – became a way not only to raise money but to share Greek culture and cuisine with the Valley. “They used family recipes to cook food and pastries in the church kitchen, made Greek dance costumes by hand so that the youth groups could perform and opened the church doors to Phoenix,” Marketing Coordinator Sandy Meris said. “Hence, the Phoenix Greek Festival was born. It has grown since and is now one of the state’s largest and oldest cultural festivals.” According to Meris, the goal was – and still is – to showcase the vibrancy of Greek culture, history and cuisine. She said that Greek people are naturally hospitable and love sharing their heritage with others. The festival is also the church’s largest fundraiser, and guests are encouraged to tour their cathedral while attending. Everything is cooked in the cathedral kitchen. The menu includes slow-roasted lamb shanks, roasted Greek chicken and potatoes with olive oil, lemon and spices, moussaka (Greek lasagna), gyros and Greek salads. Pastries are made by hand from scratch by the church’s Greek Grandmothers, or γιαγιά (pronounced ya-ya). Baklava and baklava sundaes take center stage. “Our food is the best Greek food you’ll find in the Valley,” Meris said. Various Greek beverages, such as ouzo, Metaxa, beer and wine, are also available to sample. And it wouldn’t be a Greek festival without dancing. “People come for the food but stay for the dancing,” Meris said. “We have continuous live music and exciting Greek dance performances. Our dance groups are composed of our church youth, and the costumes are now imported from Greece.” While at the festival, folks can also purchase Greek jewelry, clothing, art and grocery items. “What makes it so successful are our people and volunteers,” Meris said. “It is entirely run by our parishioners, and we put our heart and soul into making the festival a wonderful experience.” Arcadians Donna and Jim Manelis and their family have been participating since 2004. “Jim is a first-generation Greek who grew up in Denver,” Donna said. “We got our first taste of volunteering for the festival by working several shifts in the food lines.” From there, the family graduated to running their food booth, which has evolved over the years: they started selling keftedes (Greek meatballs) and chicken wings, then added chicken and pork souvlakia, Greek fries and salad to the menu. “With the help of our three children, church families, friends, neighbors and sometimes out-of-town family, we’re able to staff for the entire weekend,” Donna said.
