26 OCTOBER 2022 By Jennifer Marshall The famous adage, “necessity is the mother of invention,” perfectly describes Jenny and Norah Moo’s inspiration for establishing their home-based chocolate chip cookie business: Big Jenny’s Cookies. The business started in 2022 after Norah had trouble finding a summer job in Arcadia because she’s 15 and there are limits on the hours she can work. “For years, I’ve been baking chocolate chip cookies, and our family always said I should start a business. I figured this was a good way for Norah to earn some money as she seems to share my love for baking,” Jenny said. Before moving to Arcadia two years ago, Jenny sold real estate in the Chicago area while also working in interior design for around ten years. “I’m not a desk job type of person,” she said. “Baking is a way to relax and feel like I’m ‘creating.’ Norah also has a very creative side; although, she is much more artistic than I am and is more willing to experiment and try new recipes.” Jenny credits her brother-in-law for the name, based on an innocent reference he made years ago to her large homemade cookies. When this mother-daughter baking duo was brainstorming names for their new business venture, Norah suggested “Big Jenny’s.” Jenny said “cost and ease” had them going the home-based business route. “I researched cottage industry laws in Arizona,” she said, “and they are quite favorable to home baking. Plus, I have four kids, and my main job is running this crazy household, so I’m not interested in anything that takes me out of the house for several hours if I don’t have to.” Jenny bakes the cookies, and Norah helps while also doing all the marketing. “It’s something that someone her age can do from their phone, anywhere, at any time, so it is the perfect fit,” Jenny said. Big Jenny’s Cookies currently offers the classic chocolate chip, but they’re hoping to expand their offerings to include almond sugar and peanut butter cookies. They’re also exploring the possibility of being able to ship out of state as they work to get their product featured in local schools and businesses. “It’s been a great learning opportunity for Norah,” Jenny said, “as we drop off samples with local businesses. Marketing and sales are great lifelong skills, and I’m glad she’s been exposed to them.” Learn more on instagram @bigjennysbakery Living the sweet life with their new cookie business Jenny and Norah Moo.
