22 OCTOBER 2022 U nicorns have been a fascination throughout the ages. The mythical beings have symbolized human characteristics such as innocence, purity, boldness and positivity. Storytellers have long depicted their healing, nurturing powers. Little wonder, then, that Harmony Fulton says that the unicorn is her emoji of choice. The Cincinnati transplant has been nurturing and leading people toward health and happiness for most of her adult life. The entrepreneur teaches yoga and spin at The Madison Improvement Club these days. She and her partners also own the restaurant there, Gooder Goods. “I started teaching fitness classes in college, beginning with step aerobics. I was a cheerleader in high school, and that’s where my love for moving to music began,” Harmony said. She refers to herself as the “rainbow sheep of the family” because after graduating from the University of Cincinnati, she moved to Arizona. “It was sad to leave my parents and sister, but I just knew I needed to be around mountains,” she said. A self-guided trip to Australia and New Zealand first introduced her to the beauty of their majestic mountain ranges, and she recalls it as a life-changing experience. “It was there that a stranger totally, and unknowingly, changed the direction of my life for the better,” she said. Fulton’s birth name was Patricia, but she legally changed it to Harmony in 2003. “The word harmony and all that it connotes is definitely what I strive to be about and live up to,” she said. When she isn’t teaching a weekly nine-class schedule at The Madison, Harmony is busy ensuring that the Gooder Goods’ customers are happy, greeting most of them by their first name. “Healthy experiences are a side effect of exercise and food, and the result can be life-changing and even life-saving for some people,” she said. Fulton admits she wishes her parents could see firsthand what she has accomplished in her career and how it has helped others. “They visit from time to time and cheer me on from a distance. I don’t have plaques to display on the wall, or letters after my name, because my accomplishments are different. I inspire improvement in others and help change their mindset and behavior. Everything I do is invisible,” she said, calling it “soul school.” Fulton believes people’s heightened commitment to health is in response to the decline in society’s physical and mental well-being. “There are immeasurable benefits and it’s a wonder to see people making greater strides,” she said. Harmony and her team serve a menu of healthy foods at Gooder Goods. “We are snobs about our ingredients; if it isn’t planted-based or high quality, it isn’t used. Joe is our incredible chef and a master at making everything taste good, even gooder,” she said. Fulton admits that running a restaurant is challenging, but she continues her desire to bring harmony and contribute to the greater good. “Something in my DNA makes me care about people and things, especially animals.” She then underscores this by admitting that she’d rather save an ant than step on it.
