36 SEPTEMBER 2022 L ike most museums in the west, the Phoenix Art Museum was started by an imaginative group of people who felt it was critical for this city to have access to art. That vision began in 1915 when the Phoenix Women’s Club pledged to purchase one work of art every year. This was a grassroots effort that turned into a movement. In 1969, it formally became the Phoenix Art Museum. Now, it’s evolved into the largest of its kind in the Southwest. The gallery focuses on seven core areas: fashion, Asian, Latin American, the art of the American West, European, modern and contemporary. Altogether, the permanent collection has more than 20,000 objects. One of the most talked about exhibits is the fashion exhibition. The Phoenix Art Museum is one of just seven in the country with a dedicated fashion wing. CEO Jeremy Mikolajczak said it’s an integral part of the museum because it’s “wearable art.” “It’s a different type of medium than painting, drawing or sculpture, so it’s unique to see how fashion fits within a museum context, and it’s important to have it amongst other things,” he said. The museum’s largest – yet lesser-known – body of work is Asian art. It is one of the oldest collections and spans the entire continent, representing dozens of countries and myriad cultures. Equally important to the curators is building up collections that mirror our community, which is why Hispanic and Latin American art is also heavily celebrated. One of the most iconic paintings in the group is “The Suicide of Dorothy Hale” by Mexican painter Frida Kahlo. Mikolajczak said that museums tell stories: “We preserve those stories and cultures. There’s a great sense of respect and honor in that particular role.” By celebrating Arizona’s artistically diverse cultures, The Phoenix Art Museum hopes its patrons are proud to call this world-class facility “their” museum. The organization believes art has the power to change the world, which is why they bring in a variety of traveling exhibitions throughout the year. These range from fashion to photography to Impressionism, from Japanese theatre to one of the recent exhibits focusing on interpretations of automotive and skateboarding subcultures. Whether it’s Yayoi Kusama’s infinity mirror room, where guests are surrounded by what feels like a dancing swarm of fireflies, or the Thorne rooms – replicas of actual historical interior spaces – art can transport guests to another place and time. “We are asking people to pause, put the phone down, stop the conversation, look at something, and have a quiet moment. If you take it all in, it’s truly an amazing process,” Mikolajczak said. The mission of Phoenix Art Museum is simple: to ignite imaginations, create connections and serve as a vibrant destination. The best part is that folks can find this just minutes off an Arizona Highway. phxart.org Experience the power of art right here in Phoenix The 20,000 pieces within the museum were received through donations and traveling exhibits.
