Our dentists tell us the dos and don’ts of oral health, but often it’s hard to know which foods help best with keeping our mouths clean and tummies full. To combat that problem, Neighborhood Outreach Access to Health (NOAH) and Delta Dental of Arizona Foundation used their partnership to release the “Mouth-Healthy Cookbook,” specifically designed to provide readers with recipes that can help keep bodies and mouths in top form. The goal was to provide educational outreach to the schools to help kids eat nutritional meals. Using recipes and information provided by dieticians from NOAH, the authors filled the cookbook with meals that kids could help prep and cook along with their families. “The idea behind it was easier recipes that kids can be involved with alongside their parents or guardians,” Stephanie Olzinski, dietician supervisor for NOAH, said. “And also set it up to show different aspects of how we can think about food.” Olzinski said that it is common for people to label food as just “good” or “bad.” But within the cookbook, the recipes mention what each meal can provide for one’s mouth and teach the basic nutrition behind their food. The cookbook is separated into different categories, ranging from breakfast ideas to beverages. Recipes are simple and affordable, as NOAH and Delta Dental wanted to provide options that were not challenging and contained ingredients that folks could easily swap for another in necessary. With the different kinds of patients that NOAH and Delta Dental see, it was essential to provide diverse recipes to represent the eating styles and practices of different cultures. “They are varied, things that contain pla nt-based items but also protein like chicken and traditional dishes,” Delta Dental’s Jessica Arnold said. “We wanted to make it friendly for all dietary needs and preferences but still focused on overall health.” Currently located on the NOAH website, the cookbook is available to download for free. The teams are working to bring hardcopy versions to Valley NOAH centers. They hope to use the cookbook to educate “as many people as possible” and incorporate it into other programs and nonprofits. Both NOAH and Delta Dental are currently using a grant that they received to provide treatment to those patients that come into the emergency room with oral problems.
