18 JULY 2022 By Mallory Gleich As a youngster, Chaparral High sophomore Ethan Reniewicki watched as his older brothers obtained the rank of Eagle Scout through Boy Scout Troop 6 and knew he wanted to do the same. This summer, he did just that. “My older brothers started as Cub Scouts, but I started my scouting journey as a Boy Scout with Troop 6,” Ethan said. In the five years that Ethan has been part of the troop, he said he’d learned many things: how to focus on a goal and achieve it and various skills from merit badges – which he said fostered his love for the outdoors. “Recently, scouting has taught me a great deal on how to be a leader to the younger scouts around me, as I am currently the Senior Patrol Leader of my troop,” he said. Ethan’s Eagle Scout Project involved assisting Our Lady of Perpetual Help Church by renovating an outdoor patio. The group took out the dead plants, yard debris and rocks, painted the patio walls, put in new planters and plants, and added new rocks. “Because of this project, they can now host social gatherings on the patio for groups and organizations associated with the church,” Ethan said. Before planning, Ethan knew he wanted to help Our Lady of Perpetual Help Church, since his family has been parishioners there for the past eight years. “We also are family friends with the Pastor at the church, Greg Schlarb. I was able to correspond with him to organize the renovation easily,” he said. After completing the project, Ethan gathered all the necessary paperwork and headed to his final Board of Review, where he interviewed with a panel of adults to review his scouting career. From there, he received the rank of Eagle Scout. “After working so hard over the past four years to balance school, swim and scouting, I was proud to see my hard work pay off. This accomplishment was also emotional for me as I am the final son in my family to receive the Eagle Scout rank,” he said, “and I have earned the award that I saw my brothers earn many years ago. It was so great to share this accomplishment with them, and sitting in the ‘eagle nest’ together at the ceremony was something I will never forget.” Outside of scouting, Ethan’s main dedication is swimming. He’s been a competitive swimmer with Scottsdale Aquatic Club for six years and recently earned his way to the highest training group. “I am looking forward to competing in Oregon this summer at Speedo Summer Sectionals. I swim for Chaparral and was on the varsity team this year. At D1 State, I was a member of the 200 IM relay that placed first,” he said. Ethan plans to continue swimming and would like to study engineering in the future. He is the 222nd Eagle Scout to come out of Arcadia’s Troop 6 since it was founded in 1934. Nationwide, more than 2.5 million Scouts have earned the Eagle rank since 1912. Less than 5% of Scouts achieve this rank. Troop 6 meets at Prince of Peace Church regularly through the school year.
