20 JUNE 2022 TASTE OF THAI Arcadia residents might get a familiar feeling when they walk into Taste of Thai – before December 2021, it was known as Thai Lahna. Located on the northwest corner of 38th St. and Indian School, the restaurant served cuisine from central Bangkok and southern and northern Thailand. Thai Lahna was the first Thai restaurant in Phoenix, according to new owner Artichar Reynolds. Thanom and Jane Chaiyasut owned it for about 20 years before retiring last year, when Reynolds and his family took over. They changed the name, renovated the kitchen and dining room layout and re- opened as Taste of Thai in January 2022. “We wanted to make the restaurant more fun and modern to fit with our first restaurant [located in Ahwatukee],” Reynolds said. Some of the newer menu items are family creations that combine American and Thai dishes, such as Bacon Fried Rice. Reynolds said that the most popular items on the menu include Tom Kha Gai, the yellow curry dish and the beef masaman dish (a curry made with meat, coconut milk, onion, nuts, potatoes, bay leaves, cardamom, fish sauce and chili – to name a few ingredients!) “We are a family- owned and r un restaurant,” Reynolds said. “We attempt to make Thai food using fresh, authentic ingredients, slightly modified to fit the American palate. This makes sourcing ingredients sometimes hard, but we believe it is well worth it!” tasteofthai.co MR. MOTO PIZZERIA Located on the southwest corner of 40th St. and Camelback (a few doors down from CRUjiente Tacos) is Mr. Moto Pizzeria, a New York-style eatery that opened in April. This is the first location for the Valley – but owner Gibran Fernandez hopes that will change in the future. “The first Mr. Moto location opened in San Diego on Pacific Beach in 2015,” Fernandez said. “I opened my first location on my own after operating Pizza on Pearl in La Jolla for five years.” Fernandez said the most popular item on the menu isn’t pizza at all – in fact, it’s the stuffed knots: garlic bread spheres filled with either pepperoni and jalapeno or ricotta and spinach. “We’ve become known as the ‘home of the original stuffed knots’ because they’re so good,” Fernandez said. The most unique aspect of the business is its branding, according to the San Diego native. “We come up with well-produced, entertaining videos that our viewers really enjoy,” he said. Mr. Moto also debuts new pizzas every month: “Some are really unique, all of them are delicious,” Fernandez said. One example of pizza-of-the-month combinations included BBQ chicken, feta cheese, roasted corn, red bell peppers, mozzarella, purple onions and BBQ sauce. The pizzeria also serves beer, wings, pastas, salads, strombolis and calzones. mrmotopizza.com By Mallory Gleich The Mamma Mia.
