42 APRIL 2022 A pril 25, 2015, will forever be one of my most memorable days, as it was my wedding day. It was also a monumental day for two guests because as they were waiting for the bride and groom to make their way to the ballroom, they struck up a conversation that turned into a match made for Broadway. That one meeting turned into many, and one idea led to another. About a year later, these two acquaintances- turned-creative collaborators knew they had the makings of an incredible story in an inspirational musical called Americano . Michael Barnard, the co-author and director, has a long, experienced history in musical theatre. He’s entering his 20th season with Phoenix Theatre Company and has directed more than 560 productions in Phoenix and worldwide. So, what made him think Americano could be the next Broadway hit? “It is relevant, human, hopeful, patriotic and inspirational. The music is fresh and original, and it just seemed to be a story that came at the right time,” said Barnard. Americano is the true story of Tony Valdovinos, a young man dreaming of becoming a Marine and serving his country. On his 18th birthday, Valdovinos, full of hope and determination, walked into the Marine Corps recruiting office ready to enlist, only to find out that he was undocumented. His passion was further fueled as he watched the Twin Towers collapse to the ground during the worst terrorist attack on American soil. Devastated but not broken, Valdovinos channeled his passion for serving by fighting for people’s rights and a better America. Americano premiered at Phoenix Theatre in 2020 to sold-out audiences. So began the challenge of bringing it to a bigger stage – in New York City. That meant finding investors and raising three million dollars in three months. Enter Chicanos Por La Causa, a Phoenix organization formed in 1969 to fight discrimination against the Mexican- American community. “ Americano aligns perfectly with our values,” David Adame, President and CEO, said. “We believe in empowering lives, and dreamers are a part of that mission and call to action. We saw this as a unique opportunity to tell a Mexican-American story on a big stage, which truly is historic.” Chicanos Por La Causa always looks for unique, out-of-the-box, creative ways to further their mission. They believe Americano gaining national attention could be beneficial for Arizonans. “We want people to come away with a better understanding of the Mexican- American culture of Arizona and the southwest, which is different from the Latino experience in Florida or New York. We want theatergoers to gain a sense of pride, urgency and a call to action concerning dreamers, and we want them to be entertained. We believe Americano can serve those purposes and more,” Adame said. Barnard and Adame’s dream became a reality, now that Americano is the first Arizona-born musical heading to the Big Apple. Barnard described it as exhausting, exciting, terrifying and almost surreal and believes this is a show everyone should see. “It is a human story about one individual representing hundreds of thousands of individuals. Dreamers want to give back to this country and be the best citizens. It is a story of hope,” he said. Americano will open at the New World Stages in New York City in April.
