29 APRIL 2022 By Jennifer Marshall Katie and Mark Cosmas experienced every parent’s worst nightmare 12 years ago when their five-month-old daughter, Taylor, passed away from Sudden Infant Death Syndrome. In the wake of their grief, the pair decided to honor Taylor and other babies by creating a 5K run for the community to raise awareness for SIDS and, in that, help others grieve. “On April 18, 2010, our beautiful, healthy baby girl went down for a nap and never woke up,” Katie said. “Team Taylor was initially set up in 2011 at Pat’s Run as a team to honor Taylor Paige. After two years at Pat’s Run, we had gathered so many participants and raised a lot of money for SIDS research, so we decided to start our own race in Arcadia.” April 2022 marks the tenth and final run for the Team Taylor 5K. The event has raised more than one million dollars for research in its decade of success. They have been supported by family, friends, neighbors and parents who have lost a child to SIDS. The running course is peppered with photos of babies who lost their lives as their families set up teams in honor. “In 2020, we surpassed $1 million,” Cosmas said. “It was a huge milestone, and we know Taylor is so proud of what we’ve accomplished. At the end of this year’s race, we hope to exceed $1.3 million in total.” The Cosmas are also excited to share that their Three Butterflies SIDS Foundation, “was acknowledged in a recent article published by Boston Children’s Hospital with the findings our funds have helped to support,” Katie said. The family decided not to host the Team Taylor Run in 2020 and 2021. “Being without it has forced us to create new ways to remember Taylor, and we realize that we don’t have to have the run to keep her memory alive,” Katie and Mark said. “Taylor lives within our hearts each and every day. Our children know they have an angel looking over them, and our family and friends are amazing at acknowledging what an important part of our lives she is.” Cosmas said that several groups have contacted them about taking over Team Taylor in the future. “In the meantime, we plan to enjoy every day with our son, Cade, and daughter, Addison,” Cosmas said. teamtayloraz.com Team Taylor hosts 10th annual (and final) 5K As of 2022, the Team Taylor Fun Run has raised more than $1 million for SIDS research.
