44 MARCH 2022 By Sabrina Proffitt Among the well-known restaurants, bars and businesses lining Indian School Road in Arcadia is a hidden gem, sitting inconspicuously on the corner of 42nd Place. Without a sign facing the main street, The Little Woody almost looks like an abandoned building. Those who haven’t been inside might think it’s an unassuming neighborhood dive bar. Some know, however, that there is more than meets the eye. The Little Woody is vast compared to how it looks from the outside. With three separate areas, it has a space for every type of customer. The main area holds tables and barstools for those looking to lounge for an extended period. The next room, also known as the game room, boasts a Skee-ball machine, shuffleboard and foosball, with a DJ on the weekends. It is usually the loudest room. The final room has pool tables, couches, chairs and TVs. From here, guests can still hear the music but can comfortably assemble with a group of friends, play a game of pool or lounge around. First-timers may be surprised by the versatility and space within The Little Woody. General Manager Elle Hoyt said that Genuine Concepts initially designed the Little Woody to be that way. The space was created with a speakeasy in mind. Those who know about it know, and those who don’t, drive right past. “When we first opened up, that was the whole point,” Hoyt said. “An unassuming place that will pleasantly surprise you when you walk in. You might think ‘dirty little dive bar,’ but then you come in and realize that it’s not.” The Little Woody, owned by Genuine Concepts (the same company that owns The Vig locations, Ladera Cocina, etc.), recently celebrated its 10th anniversary. To ring in their first decade in business, the staff dedicated themselves to giving back to the community by hosting a charity raffle for Boys Hope Girls Hope, Chrysalis and Onward Hope, Inc. Patrons were offered $3 cocktails throughout the weekend and a 10x10x10 night, meaning they would have a new ten-cent cocktail each hour, for ten hours. In the ten years of being open, Hoyt said the most notable changes were physical. While they expanded twice, adding on each additional room, the message and brand of the bar remained the same. “The vibe is consistent,” Hoyt said. “We welcome everybody and want everyone to have a good time. It’s a place for you to meet your neighbors, a place for you to hide out in the corner and enjoy a drink or join a community table.” Little Woody aims to create a culture among people in the neighborhood, a place to meet new friends, and it seems they’re doing a great job at just that. littlewoodyaz.com Neighborhood speakeasy celebrates a decade 45,000 .
