18 FEBRUARY 2022 By Rachael Bouley Scottsdale and the surrounding communities are invited to this year’s annual Scottsdale Parada del Sol Historic Parade and Trail’s End Festival, which is back after a “brief” hiatus. Set for Saturday, February 5 at 10 a.m., the famous event is once again being managed by the Scottsdale Charros, who are known as Scottsdale’s Goodwill Ambassadors. The organization has longstanding ties with the Parada, initially organizing the event when it started as the Sunshine Festival in the 1950s – around the time Scottsdale was incorporated as a city. Known as Scottsdale’s Wild West event, the parade and festival have become a cherished celebration, regularly bringing over 30,000 spectators to the streets of Old Town. The 2022 Parada del Sol is presented by Oliver Smith Jeweler, which is owned by a long-time Scottsdale Charros member. Discount Tire is another big sponsor, while Dan Harkins of Harkins Theatres will be the parade’s Grand Marshal. According to Parade Chairman Jose Leon, this year’s theme is “Back in the Saddle.” “The Scottsdale Charros intend to make the parade their biggest fundraiser yet,” Leon said. “The parade and events are free and raise vital funds that are donated back to the community and its public school/education systems. This important work is mirrored by the fact that nearly a third of parade entries are local school marching bands and groups.” The Charros have been working hard with the City of Scottsdale and all the sponsors, partners, and volunteers to navigate challenges and ensure everyone stays safe. This year, parade-goers are encouraged to follow CDC guidelines for mask-wearing (wear one around large groups of people) and social distancing (six feet apart) to the best of their ability so everyone can safely enjoy the parade and festival that follows. “The Trail’s End Festival takes place immediately after the parade from 12-4 p.m. throughout the streets of Old Town. It transforms the historic district into a massive Western-style block party for all ages,” Leon said. Entrance is free, and guests can check out three massive stages of live entertainment with popular local bands such as Mogollon, Raun Alosi, the Herndon Brothers, and Dan Harkins’ band Union Rock. Scottsdale Mayor David D. Ortega will make an appearance, and there will also be food trucks, beer vendors, arts and crafts, merchandise booths, and a kids’ corral with inflatables and mechanical rides. “Not only does the Parada del Sol serve as one of Scottsdale’s longest-standing community events, but it’s free and fun for all ages,” Leon said. “It’s a vital fundraiser for the city and celebrates Scottsdale’s rich history, heritage, and cultures that are a vibrant part of its past, present and future.” scottsdaleparade.com Parada del Sol returns for 68th year of family fun The Bridwell Girls Precision Equestrian Team served as the official color guard at the 2018 Parada Del Sol event.
