A volcano is a mountain that opens downward to a pool of molten rock below the earth’s surface. When pressure builds up, eruptions occur. The danger area around a volcano covers about a 20-mile radius. Over 29 million people worldwide live within six miles of active volcanoes, and around 800 million people live within 62 miles. Fresh volcanic ash, made of pulverized rock, can be harsh, acidic, gritty, glassy and smelly. The ash can cause damage to the lungs of older people, babies and people with respiratory problems. Volcanic lightning is created by the friction of ash clouds rushing to the surface. An erupting volcano can trigger tsunamis, flash floods, earthquakes, mudflows and rockfalls. More than 80% of the earth’s surface is volcanic in origin. Numerous volcanic eruptions formed the seafloor and some mountains. Gaseous emissions from volcanoes created the earth’s atmosphere. There are more than 1,350 active volcanoes in the world. Four hundred fifty of these are part of the “Ring of Fire,” a region that encircles the Pacific Ocean. Active volcanoes in the U.S. are found mainly in Hawaii, Alaska, California, Oregon and Washington. Still, Hawaii and Alaska have the greatest chance of eruptions near areas where many people live. The sound of an erupting volcano can be quiet and hissing or explosive and booming. The loud cracks travel hundreds of miles and can cause hearing loss and break glass. The most deadly eruptions have occurred in Indonesia, with tens of thousands of lives lost. Australia has no active volcanoes. The most formidable volcanoes are called supervolcanoes. The sheer force of some volcanic eruptions can cause its magma chambers to collapse, forming a giant, bowl-shaped crater called a caldera. There are about 169 active volcanoes in the United States. The ocean contains around 10,000 volcanoes. Italy’s Mt. Stromboli has been known to be erupting for more than 2,000 years. It is nicknamed the “Lighthouse of the Mediterranean.” DID YOU KNOW?
