Container ships are waiting at the Port of Long Beach, with similar queues in ports around the country. Many ships in the Pacific hold the gifts that Arizona retailers ordered months ago. Oh dear, toys ? Children have already made so many adjustments recently. Sure enough, the playground items I had ordered were soon canceled. While toy shortages are the conflict in many Santa Claus movies, a scarcity may not be as sad as it sounds. A shift in consumption could be good for children, families and the planet. In fact, play researchers have been promoting simpler playthings long before the supply chain issue emerged. Play is how children make sense of their world. It is foundational to mathematical concepts, reading, writing, and social and emotional development. It advances the spatial awareness needed for athletics. Play is emotive and creative, which may support artistic pursuits. Adults can thank risky play such as tree climbing, jumping off things, or somersaulting downhill for whatever spatial sensibility we now rely on as adults. Play is crucial to child development. Using simple materials is supported by the three popular early childhood philosophies. Reggio Emilia-inspired schools use natural materials, create with everyday loose parts, and consider an aesthetically pleasing environment a third teacher (alongside parents and teachers). Montessori schools carefully choose materials for children to experience their five senses, and children self-select following their interests as they grow in independence. Waldorf education values open-ended, imaginative play, and handmade playthings. Waldorf’s weighted dolls could be an example of a gift to make this season with your child. The good news is that experts encourage the very types of play that our shortage may necessitate. Instead of the toys marketed to us that are loud, colorful, and plastic, we may find open-ended, collaborative, experiential toys and connect children to nature via organic materials. It becomes a present when you create stations, sensory tables, or studio space with art materials, glue, Velcro, and tools in the corner of your home or yard. Give yourselves permission to simplify and connect. This year’s toy shortage may end up having an upside.
