Though he was into wakeboarding, snowboarding, and other extreme action sports while growing up, it wasn’t until he turned 20 that he went to a two-day racing experience, where he first got the taste of racing and drifting. “I didn’t grow up around racing or any motorsports, but I was always attracted to cars, even when I was in a stroller,” the 26-year-old said. “I had tons of Hot Wheels and went to car shows with my dad when I was young.” So, what exactly is drift-driving or “drifting”? According to Haugen, it’s basically “controlled chaos.” Starting in Japan and popularized by movies like The Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift , drift-driving has slowly made its way from a niche sport to a mainstream action (or extreme) sport. Haugen explained that drifting is a form of motorsport where drivers slide the car around corners rather than maintaining traction. It’s a big burnout but at high speed, all done on purpose. “There’s something about going 90 mph and intentionally flicking the car sideways around a turn that’s just so exhilarating and wild,” Haugen said. “I find it to be a bigger adrenaline rush than wakeboarding or snowboarding.” In addition to the rush, Haugen loves the ability to turn any car into a race car, which drivers can’t do with more traditional vehicles found within NASCAR or Formula 1. “Most motorsports are very homologated and the only creativity is in the paint job,” Haugen explained. “Drifting is unique in that we can turn any RWD [rear wheel drive] passenger vehicle into our race car. This means they all look and sound different than each other, and it allows for limitless car customization and design for the car, which is another huge passion of mine.” Haugen started competing worldwide in 2019 after completing racing school earlier that year. Formula Drift was Haugen’s debut into the pro-drifting competition sports, and he said it wasn’t the best start to his drifting career. “It was a terrible debut into pro-competition, and the worst part is I did everything I could. It was just out of my hands,” Haugen said. He made up for it at competitions such as Just Drift and Vegas Drift. In 2022, Haugen will travel to Japan for the Formula Drift Japan championship. His strategy this time is to build everything himself to make sure everything is just right for the high- profile competition. “I built a racing simulator to practice drifting virtually at home,” Haugen said. “That’s been massive to practicing and developing my skills. I’m mostly looking forward to the whole adventure.” Although drifting is becoming more popular in Arizona, Haugen’s ultimate goal is to continue competing in Japan and eventually move there. He traveled there often to practice and fell in love with their culture around cars.
