When the last set is lost, the animal is unable to eat and eventually dies of starvation. Female elephants remain pregnant for two years – the longest gestation period of all mammals. An elephant can smell water from up to 12 miles away. Elephants are caring animals and have been observed to express grief, compassion, altruism and play. Female elephants spend their whole lives living in tight family groups with their female relatives.
