32 AUGUST 2021 D écor and furnishings are slowly evolving from the popular mid- century modern style to new designs that combine antiques, mid-century, contemporary and transitional trends. This nationwide trend takeover has created a more relaxed vibe and eclectic look in the home, and it has been inspired by a new and rising generation labeled the grandmillennial. This newly termed generation of 20 and 30-year-olds embrace passed-down furnishings, are nostalgic for things of the past and enjoy repurposing antique furniture. They have an appreciation for artisan-made heirlooms versus the quick-to-ship, cheaply made box furniture that gets thrown away when each new design style arrives. The grandmillennial style has even reached the big leagues of interior design. Recently, the Palm Beach Kips Bay Show House 2021 event (one of the premier show homes in the United States, in which a recognized interior designer styles each room) showed dramatic additions, including modern furniture and furniture upholstered in chintz fabrics that are warm and welcoming. Design magazines and websites have also been showcasing the grandmillennial style in homes across the country. In many of the pictured rooms, traditional furnishings were used, including farm tables, vintage outdoor furniture, wicker and chinoiserie decorative pieces. Plants and greenery with brown furniture that had been cast aside during the mid-century modern boom are also featured. Likewise, designers are also highlighting pieces from different periods and styles, such as a Louis XV- style gold mirror and commode and other 19th and early 20th century antiques. Homeowners are gravitating back to all eras of antiques as they make any room more exciting and inviting from an eclectic point of view. The grandmillennials’ interest in salvaging furniture and décor from past decades is a great way to protect the environment by recycling objects rather than adding to already massive landfills. It is a new trend that is slowly changing the home’s interior and will have a lasting and substantial impact on the future of décor.
