4 JULY 2021 EDITOR’S NOTE Forget staying at home for this year’s Fourth of July festivities. We’re finally able to head out and see all the red, white and blue events that are happening this month. Namely, our own Arcadia Fourth of July Parade, where neighbors are encouraged to decorate their wheels, walk together through the neighborhood, enjoy snacks and celebrate our country and community. In keeping with the patriotic theme, we introduce you to Arcadia resident Jerry Davis. A member of the Sons of the American Revolution organization, Davis’ most recent endeavor is honoring the neighbors who are flying their American flags accurately. “I like doing this, and I hope people in the area don’t get weirded out that someone is leaving a letter in their mailbox. We want to honor you for doing the right thing,” Davis told Arcadia News . You’ll find a few other neighbors in this issue, along with some new shopping, eating and staycation spots for the family. We want to see what you’re doing for summer vacation this year, so email your photos or share them through social media @arcadianews for a chance to be featured in our annual summer vacation section in September. Your photo might even be featured on the cover. The deadline to send in photos is August 8. We can’t wait to see all the fun you’ve had! – Mallory Gleich P.S. Arcadia News is looking for freelance writers to be part of our award- winning newspaper. We all yell at each other, and it all works out.” – Louis C.K. By Mallory Gleich On our current episode of Arcadia Podcast , we welcomed award-winning journalist Sam Lowe. His name may look familiar, as Sam is our resident On the Lowe Road columnist, composing stories of his travels and interesting finds here in Arizona. Born and raised in North Dakota, Sam moved to the Southwest in 1969. He says the reason for the move was better weather and better opportunities for advancement. He relocated to Arcadia in 1987 and retired from the newspaper industry in 1999, but continues to flex his writer’s imagination for Arcadia News . Sam told us that at one point, he would do almost anything to “get the story…” This includes being part of a circus (he knows the secret behind how they fit everyone in the clown car, and despite protests, keeps that secret) being dragged behind a truck and wing walking. Yes, Sam was strapped to the wing of an airplane that actually took off into the air. He had, and still has, many adventures. During his illustrious career, Sam wrote columns for various publications – in all, about 5,000 pieces. He’s penned several books about Arizona mysteries, legends and curiosities. “I am most proud of my longevity as a writer and that I was never fired from any position ever held,” he said. When he’s not writing On the Lowe Road , Sam spends time with his four daughters, six grandchildren and does woodworking. Learn more about Sam’s adventures by tuning in via Apple Podcasts, Spotify, Amazon, or go to arcadiapodcast.com.
