34 JUNE 2021 T ucked away inside downtown Phoenix’s historic Heritage Square on 6th St. and Monroe stands a jewel known as the Rosson House. This Victorian and Eastlake classic home was officially opened to the public in 1980 and has since found its way onto the National Register of Historic Places. For over 40 years, thousands of visitors have stepped back in time to view what life was like in late 19th century Phoenix while touring a “living history” museum. The house was built in 1895 and was considered a showcase for its owners, Dr. Roland Lee Rosson and his wife, Flora Murray. It had electric lights, an upstairs bathroom, an upstairs to downstairs speaking tube, sinks, hot and cold running water in most bedrooms and a telephone. (When visiting, also ask about the attic.) Such modern conveniences were only talked about, and the Rosson family was one of the first homeowners to bring early 20th century technologies into their home. During this time, Phoenix was on the verge of its first significant population explosion, and the Rosson residence was the grandeur of the city with its roofs, spires and tall chimneys. It was also the first house in the city made of wood and brick; everyone else’s home was made of adobe. For those interested in Victorian-era homes and furnishings, touring the Rosson House provides a treasure chest of items to explore. You will see an ornate silver plate water pitcher, nearly indestructible children’s toys that litter the play area, and a “modern” kitchen filled with implements that some of us might still be using today. To appreciate where technology has brought us, stand awhile in the doctor’s office and wonder what the patients must have endured. Visiting the Rosson House is an inexpensive and educational way to explore a bygone era. And, while you’re there, you could spot a hidden treasure that you might have in your home. heritagesquarephx.org/rossonhouse The Rosson House: A little Phoenix history Ask the Appraisers Contact Tom Helms at The123@cox.net or A-Z Appraisal & Estate Consultants; 5525 N. 12th St., Phoenix, AZ.
