46 MAY 2021 As Xavier students head into the last month of the school year, we’re taking a look back at some of their accomplishments from 2021. Sister Lynn Winsor named to the National Interscholastic Athletic Administration Hall of Fame “To be named as an inductee into the 2021 Hall of Fame is an honor I never expected,” Sister Lynn said. “In my 44 years as Xavier’s athletic director, I have had the privilege of working with outstanding student-athletes, dedicated coaches, supportive parents, and an administration that truly believes in the value of interscholastic sports. I am blessed and most grateful.” A formal ceremony will take place in December in Denver. Spiritline Coach wins Coach of the Year award Monica Gaspar added another recognition to her name with the National Federation of State High School Associations’ 2019-20 West Section Girls Spirit Coach of the Year award, presented earlier this year. This is her second time being named. “I was humbled and honored to win. I do not think any coach does this work for awards,” Gasper said. “We do it for the kids. I love the relationships I have with them and seeing them reach their goals.” Gaspar’s past accomplishments include the 2015 Xavier College Prep Woman of Achievement Award, the 2004-05 Women in Sport Leadership Award, and she was named the Arizona Spirit Coach of the Year in 1998. New varsity swim coach Glen Coy will be Xavier’s new swim coach. He currently coaches at the Rio Swim Club and has been the swim coach at Mountain View High School in Mesa since 1999. Coy has been named Arizona State High School Swim Coach of the Year six times. “I am excited to get a chance to work with the best swimmers and team in the state,” Coy said. “My goal is to bring the state championship trophy back to Xavier and carry on the traditions of winning that were set by the coaches that came before me.” Senior receives multiple awards Senior Jordan Herrera has been selected as one of Rio Salado’s two All-Arizona Academic Team scholarship recipients. The award comes with a two- year tuition waiver to any Arizona university. Herrera participates in Xavier’s Dual Enrollment Program with Rio Salado College and will graduate this May with her AA and AGS (general studies) degrees. She also won the Hispanic Heritage Foundation’s Gold Youth Award in the technology category and will compete nationally later this year. Herrera is still choosing her college, but her top four choices are UCLA, Harvey Mudd, Kenyon and UofA. PHOTO BY INVU PORTRAITS Highlights from Xavier Prep’s school year Troy Hayes, who has been with the city of Phoenix for over 20 years, was appointed director of the city’s Water Division in April. Hayes previously served as Phoenix’s assistant water services director, deputy water services director, water quality manager and water treatment program manager. Prior to working for the city, Hayes worked in the private sector for six years. Under Hayes leadership, the city’s water division has received recognitions such as Arizona Water Association’s Large System of the Year award for the Phoenix Distribution system in 2020 and 2021 and Water System Project of the Year for the Highline Booster Pump Station project. “I’m grateful for the opportunity to lead the department of over 1,400 employees who never stop working hard to provide one of our essential lifelines,” said Hayes. “I grew up in Phoenix and have spent my entire life dedicated to water. It’s an honor to continue the great work of this department as director.” Hayes is a second-generation Phoenix Water Services employee who loved spending time with his late father at the city’s water treatment plants as a kid. Phoenix Water Services provides more than 1.7 million customers with drinking water and more than 2.9 million people in the metro Phoenix area with wastewater collection and treatment services.
