40 MAY 2021 J ust an hour and a half east of the Valley is the town of Globe. The name comes from silver nuggets found in the late 1880s that resembled the Earth. Until the 1930s, copper drove the development of Globe, which was a genuine Wild West town, with brothels, tales of justice and revenge and a trading post where people came to buy and barter their wares. Globe has a colorful history with remnants of the past remaining today, but there’s plenty of new and exciting additions to make your visit fun and memorable. Globe is famous for its Mexican food. La Casita on Broad Street was started by a great grandmother and her two sisters from Marfa, Texas. La Casita has six locations across Arizona, but the original was opened in 1947 by Salusita Reynoso in Globe. It’s now run by the 4th generation of the La Casita legacy. Great-great-grandson Ray told us that the family’s women are the true recipe for the restaurant’s longevity. He said that they push hard and never give up. The restaurant boasts tried and true recipes created by Salusita, like her green chili enchiladas and green corn tamales. If your taste buds are craving another type of cuisine, Bloom is a sushi and Asian fusion restaurant that serves food from Vietnam, Malaysia and Singapore. Some of their signature dishes are the teppanyaki beef, an Arizona star roll filled with spicy tuna, asparagus and topped with avocado and eel sauce or the “trust me roll,” which is never on the menu and never the same. You have to trust the chef’s creativity. Bravo is another restaurant option in Globe, and they are all about the wood- fired pizza and putting new twists on Italian and European favorites. It’s like going around the world without needing a passport. If you are looking for a bit of adventure, head over to the Old Dominion Mine Park. The mine permanently closed in 1931, and the area is now used for recreation and gatherings. It has 13 trails all named after original mine claims. The “silver nugget” starts at the park’s main entrance. It’s flat, making it great for walking and biking and features a boneyard of historic mining artifacts to explore. There’s also a mining- themed playground, picnic pavilions and a nine-hole disc golf course. Another option is to take a guided bike adventure with Darryl Griffin of E-volve Adventure. He grew up in Globe and loves getting folks out to explore his hometown. It’s a great way to cruise through the town’s silver and copper mining history and take in the great views of the clouds rolling over the Pinal Mountains. Globe is yet another Arizona town that proves you can get away without going far. When you arrive, you’ll be about 2500 feet higher in elevation and 10 degrees cooler. And when you leave, you will know more about Arizona’s exciting past and may even take home a trinket to remind you of your close-to-home getaway.
