38 APRIL 2021 By Rachael Bouley Artist Sean ‘Hoylarious’ Hoy is putting his talent to immeasurable use and raising funds for a cause that is near to his heart. Hoy is donating a portion of proceeds from his sales to Living Hope Cancer Foundation, a nonprofit founded by his friends Chuck and Hannah Keels. The Arcadia husband and wife duo are cancer survivors who created the foundation to provide personalized cancer support, lifestyle coaching and patient advocacy education. “Chuck and Hannah and their true strength, character, faith and positive views are the motivations for my inspiration for Living Hope,” Hoy said. “I cannot imagine what they as a couple and individuals have endured, and yet they do not let cancer rule their lives.” As his nickname suggests, Hoy specializes in bright and colorful artwork that showcases his quirky humor and life’s simple joys. “Humor is my driving force – it’s whimsical wrapping with a bit of fun and inclusion for all,” Hoy said. “Humor is such a powerful tool, and when mixed with art, it can heal much.” The self-taught painter and philanthropist is often inspired by his love of animals and his experience as a professional cartoonist. His offbeat humor shines through in his art as he looks to lift spirits and spread happiness while supporting Living Hope. Hoy has plans for a humorous, cancer- related gift book, a mural, T-shirts and other projects to support the foundation, but for now, he is focusing on giving back up to 25% of his proceeds to the nonprofit. “I love creating art and supporting our local communities because it makes me feel like I am part of a bigger cause, and I can add what I believe will help us all,” Hoy said. Hoy is no stranger to getting involved in the community, having collaborated on programs and art/performing gigs for the Arc of Tempe, Phoenix Children’s Hospital, United Way, Arizona Humane Society and more. He has participated in over 200 art shows since his first major commission in 2007. Hoy has drawn his entire life and developed his skills through practice, having taken only a handful of art classes. He majored in communications and public speaking at ASU and landed an editorial cartoonist gig in his second year. His freelance work and stand-up comedy helped him connect to the local community, and he’s had some special projects along the way. These include 35 caricatures for the Celebrity Room at Los Abrigados Resort in Sedona, a full-color mural at The Four Seasons in Scottsdale and a series of murals for The Perch Brewery in Chandler.
