In the past, khaki pants and golf shirts or suits and high heels were the norms, but today it’s not unusual to see an entire team of people wearing hoodies and stretchy pants. While focusing less on appearances can allow you to focus your energy more on work, there are occasions when you should make an effort with your attire. Interviewing for jobs requires a more formal dress code, even if you’re working remotely. Dressing up for a virtual job interview is similar to writing a thank you note afterward. It’s not something that you have to do. But if you want the job, you do it to show interest. It is recommended that you wear an outfit you would have worn to an interview before the pandemic, and make sure you’re well- groomed as well. Beyond what you look like, you also need to pay attention to your environment. In an in-person job interview, you’d go to an office for the meeting. But when you interview remotely, you have to pay attention to your surroundings. Clean up the area around you. Be sure your space is quiet. Consider the best-lit room in your home for an on- screen appearance. This may sound like a lot of work, but it’s worth it for the job offer you’ll secure. Maybe the job will be remote, and you’ll have the opportunity to wear casual clothes day-to-day. Ultimately, office attire is likely to look different in the future. Perhaps hoodies and yoga pants will become the norm.
