4 MARCH 2021 EDITOR’S NOTE As I sit in my office, admiring the sun shining through my window and wading through copious emails, I can’t help but feel grateful. Grateful to be part of Arcadia’s community newspaper, that I have emails to go through. In March of 2020, we started to see the nation change. I was scared. But now, I feel hopeful. Usually, the theme for March’s edition is “spring.” But I think this year, our theme for March should be “hope.” Hope for what’s to come, as vaccines roll out and our community continues to grow and flourish. This month, we are featuring a familiar name: Charlie Keating IV. Keating was a U.S. Navy SEAL who was killed while serving in Iraq. But before that, he was an Arcadia resident. I was able to talk to his mother, Krista, after she released her latest book, Charlie, Don’t Be a Hero . Charlie accomplished so many things in his life, and the pride that Krista feels was evident with every word she spoke. Krista sent me a copy, and within the first 50 pages, I almost cried…more than once. It details Charlie’s time overseas and his life growing up in Arcadia. Charlie attended Hopi and Arcadia High. He had a successful athletic career running track and as Krista said with a laugh, “He got into – and out of – trouble.” Although parts of the book are met with a heavy heart, there are good memories, too. Stories like the ones in this month’s pages are those that give us hope here at Arcadia News , and we “hope” they will make you feel the same. As always, if you have story ideas or briefs, please send them to editor@arcadianews.com. APRIL Outdoors MAY Women Appreciation JUNE Summer JULY Summer “All we have to decide is what to do with the time that is given us.” — J.R.R. Tolkien By Cody Kennedy Their mission is a straightforward one, and their cause affects 1,000 to 3,000 families in each school district across Arizona. Feed Our Babies USA aims “To bring community resources together to develop and implement a sustainable, nutritious food source for hungry families, one school district at a time.” FOB will undergo a strategic rebranding in March and will be renamed Feeding Students USA. “The reason behind the rebranding is truly simple,” Founder Joni Navarro-Sucato said. “Every time I speak to a group about Feed Our Babies USA, I always get questions: ‘How old are the babies you feed? Do you need diapers? How can we help with the babies in need?’” Navarro-Sucato explained that the nonprofit wanted to leverage its growth in the community by creating a brand that defines the organization’s role more precisely, to help build stronger alliances within communities. In 2020, FOB helped over 1,000 Scottsdale Unified families by providing them with food boxes. As of February 2021, the nonprofit has helped over 300 families with food boxes. “We are seeing so many more families this year due to Covid,” Navarro-Sucato said. “Most people in and around Arcadia have no idea there is so much need within our schools.” Navarro-Sucato explained that FOB is different because they work with school community service leaders that let the nonprofit know which families need help. “We do not identify per income like most state-mandated food banks. At this point, we are the only nonprofit that works with the schools daily,” she said. In the future, Feeding Students USA would like to bring its mission to other communities, states and countries. They’ve even been asked to go to Mexico to help build a food bank. feedourbabiesusa.org Feed Our Babies nonprofit undergoes rebranding Arcadia Troop 6 helps the hungry The boys in Arcadia Troop 6 were busy on a recent Saturday morning when they participated in the annual Scouts BSA Scouting for Food event. The boys gathered over 500 pounds of canned and non-perishable items and delivered them to the local food bank, Feed Our Babies. Troop 6 Scouts also volunteered at St. Mary’s Food Bank, where they packed over 800 bags of food for the hungry. The Troop participates in multiple community service events each year.
