It’s hard to imagine not being able to get in a vehicle, run to the store and pick up necessities like bread, produce and canned goods. Enter Scottsdale’s Brown Bag Program, which helps older residents get the nutrition they need while staying safe and socially distant. Operating out of Granite Reef Senior Center, the program serves between 200 and 300 clients every year. “The goal of the initiative is to help low- income seniors and the disabled with food so they can use their limited resources for other necessities like utilities and rent,” said Kevin Herrick, who works at the senior center. To be eligible, recipients must be Scottsdale residents 62 and older, collecting Social Security and living within a specific income bracket. Disabled adults residing in Scottsdale can be of any age, but they have to fall within a particular income range. The program is annual, so participants must apply each year. Program participants can pick up their food from the Granite Reef Senior Center, Via Linda Senior Center, the Arizona Retirement Community or The Flats at Granite Reef apartment complex. Distributions are made on the first and third Thursday of the month, and each client must preselect one of the four venues to pick up their items. There is a maximum capacity of 240 clients and there is a waitlist. The program offers curbside and contactless pick-up. “The City of Scottsdale Human Services Department purchases a fold-over bag from Desert Mission, which contains a wide assortment of canned goods including fruits, vegetables, tuna fish and chicken. This forms the foundation of the bag,” Herrick said. Scottsdale Community Partners works with the city on the Brown Bag Program and provides supplemental food items like eggs, deli meat and cheese. Sometimes their bag is based on a particular food theme, like a Mexican or Italian meal, and includes all the essential ingredients. “We also work with St. Mary’s Food Bank,” Herrick said. “They donate fresh bread and produce, and they also offer a food box once a month that our clients are free to take. This box typically contains additional canned goods along with packaged single cook meals.” The Scottsdale Vista Del Camino Food Bank also donates items to the program. In addition to all these community partners, the Brown Bag Program also receives proceeds from the CARES Act, providing needed funding for the increased call for food. “COVID has also changed how we do business,” Herrick said. “All food bags are distributed outside. Also, we are no longer allowed to use volunteers to help with our distribution. The nascent organization is quickly gaining momentum. “We began by brainstorming ideas we were passionate about,” Sanya explained. “I was thinking of something feminist-oriented.” Anaiya wanted to help women with medical needs due to her grandmother’s struggles with Lymphoma. “We had always had the idea to start something that would impact the community and the people we care about, and this idea seemed perfect,” she said. The duo’s vision took shape after forming their nonprofit and promoting HfH on Instagram and through word of mouth. Thanks to Anaiya’s mom – Sheetal Chhaya, a rheumatologist in Phoenix – an ideal pilot project for HfH appeared right out of the gate. “Jeanne Nizigiyimana, who is the director, co-founder and program manager of the Women’s Refugee Health Clinic at Valleywise, was aware of our vision,” Anaiya explained. “She furthered our passion for assisting these women by suggesting we get involved with the center’s Refugee Holiday Drive.” The drive was making PPE kits with hand sanitizer and masks and including 150 packs of baby wipes for new mothers. Rising to the challenge, the girls decided to initiate a campaign at their high school. After the dean and the school senate approved the idea, the two placed donation boxes around the campus. They publicized the event by sending out emails to students, faculty and staff. “It was a tight deadline, but was very successful,” Sanya said. “We collected 200 baby wipe packages, which exceeded our goal.” Anaiya and Sanya have set their sights even higher, hoping to branch out into neighboring states and countries as well. Using Instagram and help from international family members, they have started reaching out to others who might want to be a part of their organization. “We’ve also begun recruiting international ambassadors of all ages in Korea, the U.K., Canada, Guatemala and India,” Anaiya said. “The ambassador’s responsibility is to expand HfH’s platform and recruit other members to share their mission, mainly through social media. In addition to attending online meetings, they re-post our stories to their accounts.” Currently, HfH has numerous ambassadors and over 1,000 Instagram followers worldwide. The duo plans to hold Zoom sessions to clarify each job category, such as marketing coordinator, graphic designer, outreach coordinator, writer and ambassador. The girls are also considering partnering with Liquid IV, a company that sells products designed to replenish electrolytes. The goal is to provide replenishment to breastfeeding moms with premature babies. To jump-start their venture, Sanya and Anaiya are emailing various hospitals to initiate new projects.
