44 DECEMBER 2020 By Melissa Hirschl For the past five years, the AZ-TV Channel 7 “Stuff the Bus” campaign has become a lifesaver for Arizona children living in poverty. Thanks to generous donations and a cadre of volunteers, 7,000 kids could start the school year prepared, excited and hopeful. Kids at a variety of schools were presented with backpacks brimming with glue sticks, pencil boxes, colored pencils, crayons, folders, pencils and more. According to Ashlee Lewis Richman, director of community outreach and marketing, the station partners with first responders, local organizations and community partners to collect school supplies for students who might not have even a pencil when they start school. “The kids are so excited to get backpacks; they just go nuts. They are so proud to wear them,” she said. Brad Perry, host of the station’s Arizona Daily Mix, said he had a visceral reaction to watching the kids receive their backpacks. “I’ve got to admit, I walked off and cried after seeing the kids tear up because they never had a pencil, never had a pen. I literally got in my car and cried because it was so emotional to see these kids,” he said. STB came to fruition because of the efforts of Jack London, deceased husband of the station’s owner, Lynn London. As the founder of Lincoln H e r i t a g e L i f e Insurance Company and London Insurance Group, he was able to leverage his business acumen and influence to create a school reading program that achieved rewarding results. By teaming up with the South Phoenix Missionary Baptist Church, London and the reverend from the church were able to promote Learn and Earn. “It was a way to give the children in the neighborhood a safe place to go during the summer months, promote reading, and monetarily reward them according to how many books they read,” Richman said. She then found out that the kids were using their earnings to buy school supplies. “The answer was so practical, real and sobering. I knew there was something we could do, and STB was the solution. After Jack passed away, his wife Lynn gave permission and support to carry out the campaign,” Richman said. This is the fifth year that Stuff the Bus was able to donate to students.
