36 DECEMBER 2020 By Rachael Bouley Rebel Lounge has a long and colorful history in the Valley’s live music scene. Located at the corner of Indian School Road and 23rd St., the award-winning music venue has welcomed people from all walks of life for decades, introducing them to both new and well-known artists. The 1950s-era building was initially called the Branding Iron and was known as an in- demand spot for comedy, live music and go- go dancing. In 1979, Clyde Shields acquired the building and founded The Mason Jar, eventually selling it to Franco Gagliano. The venue became a big hit with artists and local music lovers alike. Jeff Taylor, a talent buyer and marketer at Rebel Lounge, said the venue is rich with musical history. “In the ’80s and ’90s, many up-and-coming rock acts cut their teeth playing small clubs across the country before making it big,” Taylor said. “Artists like Tool, Rage Against the Machine, Joan Jett, Guns N’ Roses, Nirvana, Green Day, Jane’s Addiction, Stone Temple Pilots and more all played at The Mason Jar.” Despite its popularity, The Mason Jar shut its doors in 2005, and several short-term bars followed before Rebel Lounge was established by owner Stephen Chilton of Psyko Steve Presents. Since he took over the building in 2015, it’s become a hotspot for up-and- coming artists, adding to a long list of previous performers, including acts such as Louis The Child, We The Kings, Beach Bunny, Shooter Jennings and many more. However, with the pandemic disrupting live music venues, Rebel Lounge had to pivot to a new venture. The rock and punk music spot has added a coffee concept called Reap & Sow Coffee Bar. Chilton joined forces with good friends Luke Bentley and Lance Linderman, owners of Driftwood Coffee in Peoria, to bring the idea to life. “Steve and Lance had discussed several times over the years the idea of doing a coffee shop during the day inside Rebel,” Taylor said. “Entering summer of 2020, as it became clear that COVID was going to keep the venue closed longer than we initially anticipated, we realized that this seemed like the perfect time to try and make it happen.” The hard work and creativity to get Reap & Sow running were well worth it, and they welcomed customers back for the first time in seven months in late October. “The support since we reopened has been awesome,” Taylor said. “Right now, the plan is to keep Reap & Sow operating during the day whenever shows come back.” The coffee shop is all about rock ‘n’ roll combined with good food and drinks. The funky building certainly fits the bill for a community coffee shop and hangout with an urban vibe. Visitors can get their fill of specialty coffee, pastries, burritos and cocktails. The shop opens at 7 a.m. daily. This is in addition to the opening of the Rebel Lounge as a bar for evening weekend hours. While Rebel Lounge and other independent entertainment venues look for relief from the federal government, the community has shown much-appreciated support through a t-shirt campaign to raise funds and frequenting the new coffee shop. “Since reopening, lots of our neighbors and music lovers from all over the Valley have stopped in to check out the new layout and grab a coffee or drink,” Taylor said. “It has been great to see familiar faces coming through the door for the first time in over seven months. There has also been a great reaction online from our community, and we hope that folks that haven’t had a chance to come to visit yet will be able to check it out soon.” While a crowded concert may still be a way off, the Rebel Lounge and Reap & Sow team look forward to serving the community and offering a relaxing spot to get away from it all. That’s what Taylor loves the most about this gig. “For me, the best part of working at the Rebel Lounge is being part of a small, passionate team that produces events that bring joy to people in our community,” Taylor said. “We hope to see the safe return of live music sooner rather than later. We miss shows as much as anyone else and can’t wait until we can get back to doing what we do best – hosting awesome events.” reapsow.com Storied lounge and music venue adds new concept to its lineup (from left) Driftwood Coffee owners Luke Bentley and Lance Linderman with Rebel Lounge/Reap & Sow owner Stephen Chilton.
