PHOTO COURTESY OF MCKENNA DOUGLAS By Rachael Bouley It has been a big year for McKenna Douglas, as the Notre Dame Prep High School junior and Arcadia resident just committed to play NCAA Division 1 Volleyball at San Diego State University. Douglas has also been ranked in the top 50 players in the country for the class of 2022 by PrepVolleyball. Being recognized as one of the most promising athletes in the libero position (a player specialized in defensive skills) is a big deal for the dedicated athlete. “I am so honored to be ranked 48 in the country, listed with so many other amazing players,” Douglas said. Determination and leadership on the court helped Douglas stand out, giving her the chance to collect some well-earned accolades and secure a spot at her dream college. “I was so beyond excited to commit to SDSU,” Douglas said. “It had everything that I was looking for in a college – its coaching staff, location, facilities, academics and so much more.” Douglas had been thinking about college recruiting for a couple of years, and once she got the ball rolling with San Diego State this past June, she was overjoyed to get an offer and knew it was the right place for her. Douglas has spent the past decade on the court after first starting club volleyball at eight years old. She followed in her sister’s footsteps, having cheered her on from the sidelines before trying volleyball for herself. Douglas quickly fell in love with the game and said she hasn’t looked back since, embracing all the friendships she’s made along the way, not only with her teammates but with other players from across the country. “That is something I would have never been able to do without volleyball,” Douglas said. “The competitiveness, friendships, traveling and playing in front of big crowds is just so amazing.” Douglas credits her team at Arizona Storm Elite Volleyball Club with preparing her for success. “I have been blessed to play on a club team that has been nationally ranked in the top 10 each year since we were 12,” Douglas said. “My club team has won several tournaments and medaled each year at USA Nationals.” Getting a spot on national watch lists and earning the starting libero role for Notre Dame Prep as a freshman also made a massive difference to her blossoming athletic career. Douglas also made the second team all-region for 5A in her freshman and sophomore years. As Douglas looks to finish her time at Notre Dame on a high note, she acknowledges how much her academic opportunities have given her. “NDP has taught me to balance school work with athletics,” Douglas said. “I am challenging myself in the classroom, and it has taught me to get out of my comfort zone. They have also taught me reverence, respect and responsibility.” Douglas is considering a career in special education and loves to paint and draw when she’s not playing volleyball. In terms of her on-court goals for college and beyond, she’s aiming high. “I want to win a conference and national championship while at SDSU,” Douglas said. “I also want to make the USA team, and after I finish college ball, go play overseas.” Notre Dame Prep volleyball player commits to D1 college
