16 SEPTEMBER 2020 By Amanda Goossen Arcadia News is starting something new, and I’m so happy to be a part of it! My name is Amanda Goossen and for five years, I was part of the Arcadia News family. I was lucky to be at the helm of the editorial department as managing editor, putting out some wonderful stories about the Arcadia community. Now, I’m back to once again bring my passion to the paper in a whole new way. With the creation of a new podcast, Arcadia News will be able to do what we do best, but through a different medium. Now you’ll be able to hear the laughter of the women who own a new retail and dining hot spot, and you can sense the frustration of the chef who’s trying to run a local restaurant during a pandemic. You will discover, firsthand, the stories that make up the businesses in our community. Greg Bruns, owner and publisher of Arcadia News , explains, “Podcasting gives us the opportunity to expound on topics and stories that we don’t have room for in print. These are the stories that are best told in interviews with people, where they can use their own voice to connect with the listener.” Using audio and video technology in connection with the paper was something the team at Arcadia News wanted to do for a while. The COVID-19 pandemic just accelerated the process. “We’ve wanted to put together a podcast for the last year, but it was a Google grant that really enabled us to bring it to life. In May, Google News put together a Journalism Emergency Relief Fund, and Arcadia News was one of the newspapers selected to receive a grant. It was pretty cool to know that we made the cut,” said Bruns. The podcast, titled Arcadia, can be found on a number of platforms, including Spotify and Apple Podcasts. Video footage for some interviews can be found on YouTube. “It’s been a lot of fun just exploring the options with this new (for us) method of news delivery. We’re just getting started, so I’m really looking forward to seeing what kind of compelling stories we can share,” said Bruns. “Working with our former editor and a friend of the paper helps bring a fresh perspective to the storytelling. I really like that we can offer a print alternative to our readers and advertisers.” So get ready Arcadia, because we can’t wait to share our new project with you. We hope you will tune in and enjoy! Arcadia News launches community- focused podcast Amanda Goossen "We're just getting started, so I'm really looking forward to seeing what kind of compelling stories we can share.” Meet the famous “Junk in the Trunk” ladies and find out how they got their start (did you know the police were called at their very first sale?). Since it was built in the late 1950s, the building that previously stood at 4418 E. Osborn Road had several suites inside that were occupied with small businesses of all types, including: Frontier Barbershop (1960-1977), Fashionette AZ (1960-1961), Totten Dance Studio (1960-1961), Dynamic Electronics (1962-1963), Neptune Supply Co. When the crew removed the siding from the building, it revealed an old memory of the Frontier Barbershop that operated from 1960-1977. The Vintage, today.
