46 JUNE 2020 WATER BALLOON BASEBALL The batter has three chances to hit and burst the water balloon. If they miss it all three times, they’re out. If they hit the balloon and it explodes, they run to first base. The pitcher and or any other participant besides the batter are allowed one water balloon per base to throw at the batter – if they hit them, the batter’s out. If the batter makes it around the bases without being caught, they score a run. Take turns at each position. Items needed: • Lots of prefilled water balloons • Whiffle bat or bat of your choice • Four hula hoops or other items for bases BALLOON PING PONG Blow up a balloon to use as the ball. Make the paddles out of paper plates taped or glued to Popsicle sticks. The rules of the game are simple: Don’t let the balloon hit the ground. Items needed: • Paper plates • Popsicle sticks or craft sticks (the big ones) • Glue or tape • A bag of balloons BACKYARD BOWLING Collect 10 two-liter bottles and use them for your pins. Use any ball of choice (basketballs work great) as your bowling ball. Put a few inches of water at the bottom of each bottle for weight. You can make a family project out of painting the bottles to resemble actual bowling pins. Items needed: • Ball • 10 two-liter bottles filled with a few inches of water BEAN BAG LADDER TOSS Set up a ladder in the backyard and write 10, 20, 30, 40, and 50 on sheets of paper. Tape one sheet of paper to each step of the ladder. Have kids toss bean bags between the rungs of the ladder. Keep track of the points. Items needed: • Step ladder • Sheets of paper or note cards • Colored magic marker set DIY backyard activities for the whole family Blow up a balloon to use as the ball. Make the paddles out of paper plates taped or glued to Popsicle SUPERSIZED TICTACTOE Place hula hoops in a grid pattern. Two participants pick X or O and they take turns placing paper plates in the hula hoops. Regular tic-tac-toe rules apply. Items needed: • Ten paper plates. Paint an X on five plates and an O on another five. • Nine hula hoops Tip: Give bonus points for getting a bean bag to land on one of the steps. This principle works excellent for one kid, who can try to beat their score each time, or let multiple kids play to see who gets the highest score. PHOTO: SANDRA TENUTO PHOTOGRAPHY, SANDRATENUTO.COM
