We strive to contribute to the fabric of this community, and we are proud of the people and the area we have served for 28 years. This “good news newspaper” really belongs to you , since we wouldn’t exist without the stories and the advertising. Readers help us discover positive stories about our neighbors, businesses, schools, sports and children, and they patronize our advertisers, who support the paper in multiple ways. The Arcadia News is not part of a newspaper chain or a media conglomerate. My wife Jennifer and I own the paper, and we live in Arcadia, where we are raising our two sons (plus a dog and a few chickens). We have local employees who have their own families, and we like to hire local freelance writers and photographers. We support area businesses by calling on the advertisers in our paper, and we appreciate our readers doing the same. This crisis has been rough on businesses and people all over the world, but it’s really hard to watch this impact our neighbors and their businesses. We have worked with many of them for more than 20 years. With cash flows unpredictable, some of our customers have had to reduce their ad budgets. We work with them however we can, because now is not the time to cut an expense that might bring in new customers and generate income. Like most free newspapers, we make money by selling advertising. These dollars support the paper and fund all of our efforts to providing you with award-winning community news. 5 MAY 2020 By Mallory Gleich Arcadia High School seniors had a lot to look forward to in the last two months of school, and then the COVID-19 pandemic hit. Arcadia News asked a few students how they’re coping with online classes and how they plan to spend their final weeks as seniors. Charlie Siegel All of my teachers have been working hard with the tools they have been given to make this process as smooth as possible, but frankly, it is hard on them and us. The lessons we are getting are not what they would have been under normal circumstances, and the motivation that we, as students, have to find to get work done is not there. Not only do we have to learn from home with little guidance from teachers, but the work has become entirely reliant on self- responsibility, and it is not easy to make this drastic change so close to the end of our senior year. As far as graduation celebrations go, I think that everyone is trying to get excited about where we are going next. I was supposed to sing the National Anthem and give a speech at graduation. Now I am trying to be optimistic and celebrate a great high school career and look forward to my future at the University of Southern California. Bo Carden I enjoy taking online school. While it is disappointing that I can no longer see my fellow classmates and friends in the classroom, I think that online school for me is a lot less stressful. It’s nice being able not to have to wake up early and do homework and be able to study on my schedule. I also like that I don’t have to worry about what attire I have to wear at school or worry about being tardy. I am still looking forward to the day when the class of 2020 can have our graduation. I have been thinking of how our school could put on an optional graduation for anyone who would want to walk down and receive their diploma in a cap and gown because I am sure that most seniors would love to have this opportunity. Ellie Treon I was supposed to speak at my graduation. I worked on my speech for hours and auditioned for the spot. I was so excited for the opportunity to speak in front of my peers one last time. Our last few months of high school will now be spent indoors alone, away from the people we have grown up with. This pandemic will be what defines the class of 2020. It feels like we had some of the best moments of our lives ripped away from us. There is no sugar-coating it, and looking for a silver lining feels trivial. However, the attitude seems to be shifting, little by little. The support from understanding teachers and parents has helped a lot. Now, instead of focusing on our losses, people have started considering alternative methods for activities such as graduation. Nothing will compare to the real experience, and we will never get that last moment surrounded by our family and friends at graduation, but we know we have to try our best to remain hopeful. Charlotte Crowson Arcadia has been doing a really good job trying to cheer us all up. We have assignments for school that our teachers post on various online platforms, and also, we do Zoom calls with teachers throughout the week if we need help. All of our teachers have been there for us, and we all appreciate it very much. The teachers made us all a video explaining how sorry they are and sent it to all of us. My family is thinking of celebrating graduation by doing a full family Zoom call, but hopefully, we can have graduation in-person! Anna Gibb Online school for me is going very well. Of course, it is different from what I am used to, but personally, the adjustment has been easy. I schedule my days out so that I have some structure at home. The workload has not been too bad, and it is easy to communicate with my teachers, which is helpful. I am upset about possibly not having graduation and all of the other fun senior things, but I know that it is for the best; better to be safe than sorry. To celebrate, I am sending out graduation announcements and am planning on doing a little get together when this all calms down, hopefully sometime this summer. I am trying to keep my head up and stay positive and pray for everyone in these tough times. Grace Schlenker Online school has been very frustrating as a senior. It’s challenging to stay motivated when all of the things you’ve worked so hard for the past four years (prom, awards banquets, graduation, etc.) are uncertain, but you’re still being assigned work from all of your classes as if everything is continuing as normal. Our teachers have been good at communicating changes, but overall a lack of motivation is something I have seen in both myself and my peers. Graduation is something that I think should be held even if they need to change the structure of it in order to accommodate the CDC guidelines. School districts need to recognize the work that seniors have put in the past four years and grant them the closure of high school. Personally, I have already started looking beyond high school into college and that is how I have remained positive through this situation.
