53 NOVEMBER 2019 CODE TALKER WORD SEARCH Phillip Johnston came up with the idea of using the Navajo language as a code in WWII. The Navajo Code Talker test program was started in 1942. The Code Talkers were between the ages of 15 and 25. 16 Navajo Code Talkers were killed in action. Since Navajo was only a spoken language, there was not a written alphabet. Words were chosen from nature to create the alphabet code. Example: The word lo-tso means whale in Navajo, and was the code word for battleship. Navajo Code Talkers were protected and were not allowed to be captured at any cost. The Navajo code word for America was “Our Mother.” When the soldiers returned home they were not allowed to tell anyone what they did during the war.
