32 OCTOBER 2019 By Mallory Gleich If you’re looking for Leigh Lewis, chances are you’ll find her cycling around Arcadia, hiking with her dogs, or providing naturopathic care to the women of the Valley at Arcadia Women’s Wellness (AWW). Lewis opened AWW in June of this year, looking to provide “integrative health care” to women across the reproductive life span, from adolescence through menopause.” In addition to diet, lifestyle and herbal therapies, Lewis decided to start a micro- clinic-of-one and the Women Caring 4 Women networking group. “I hear from patients all the time that they can never actually talk to their provider unless they come in for an appointment, even for simple questions, and to schedule an appointment often involves phone tag with reception staff,” Lewis said. With the micro-clinic, Lewis offers online scheduling through the website and answers phone calls and emails herself. “It cuts another layer of hassle out of the medical care process,” Lewis said. “The Women Caring 4 Women networking group started in 2018. We have grown to over 50 participants including medical doctors, naturopathic physicians, acupuncturists, psychologists, physical therapists, nutritionists, nurse practitioners, midwives, doulas and massage therapists.” The group’s purpose is to enable members to ask questions or seek referrals from other members. They also have get- togethers several times a year. AWW also offers workshops for pre- and postnatal care and small-group, all- level women’s yoga classes on Sunday afternoons. Lewis grew up in New Jersey and moved to Phoenix when she was 10 years old. She attended Xavier Prep and went to U of A for a double major in psychology and philosophy before heading to Bastyr University in Seattle for medical school. She has been studying, practicing and specializing in integrative women’s health care for more than 15 years. “The gynecology clinic I worked at in Portland was women-run and I really appreciated the fact that it was such an inclusive and collegial environment,” Lewis said. “It was called ‘Synergy’ and I believe that was ingrained in the environment there: doctors, physicians, acupuncturists all working together. Patients loved it. I wanted to create something like that here.” After college, Lewis worked as a psychiatric case manager for Maricopa & Pima counties. She originally planned on becoming a psychiatrist, but one of her mentors, Dr. Mario Cruz in Tucson (at the time), told her about naturopathic medicine and acupuncture and the rest is history. “The tagline [for AWW] is Body * Mind * Chi,” Lewis said. “I believe that all three need to be in balance to achieve optimal health and wellness.” Lewis said that her goal for AWW is to provide the best care she can through the phases of life. “It takes a village, no one practitioner can provide all the care for a patient at all times, that is why I have made it a priority to meet with as many women’s health care providers as possible since I have moved to the Valley three years ago,” she said. When she’s not at the office, Lewis enjoys hanging out with her husband and dogs, doing yoga or cooking with fruits and veggies from her garden. For more: arcadiawomenswellness.com.
