18 OCTOBER 2019 By Kaylee McClaine As the temperatures cool down in Phoenix, four-legged Arcadians can start getting out of the house and taking their humans with them. The Furry Friends Fine Art Festival is one event where both pets and their owners are welcome and it is set for October 5 at the Shemer Art Center. “We created the Furry Friends Fine Arts Festival to capture the attention of the early morning fitness enthusiasts in Arcadia who are usually out walking, some with their dogs,” said Shonna James, president and executive director of Shemer. This annual event draws together Arcadians, their pets, animal lovers and art while giving attendees a reason to visit Shemer, a historical landmark in which occupies the first home built in Arcadia. The event showcases local artists and pet-related businesses. The festival also partners with the Arizona Humane Society to give families the opportunity to adopt a furry friend. “The artwork showcased during this festival is amazing, and attendees always find something relative to their house or pets,” James said. The festival is run by the Shemer Art Center staff. There are also a number of artists and business vendors who have been selected to participate. Jules Gissler, Dadra Hunt and Ann Marie Hoff will be back again this year. Gissler has been creating the event art since it began in 2016. Hunt and Hoff will do their signature paw readings. This year will feature the work of 18 local artists. Other vendors include Ingleside Animal Hospital, Arcadia Puff & Fluff, Hatton Pet Portrait Studio, Bentley’s Biscuits, Gems 4 Paws/Gem Girl Jewelry and Husse AZ. In addition to meeting local business vendors, there will be presentations about “Pet-Safe Plants” at 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. by Arcadia Color Garden, as well as live music by Alan Jones. There will be various food and beverage vendors, including Black Cat Coffee House, Mein Man, and Leo’s Ice Cream (with Frosty Paws for pets), and an art raffle. The Furry Friends Fine Art Festival is a community favorite that helps support the non-profit art center. “The event is very targeted, and we have had a tremendous response from the neighborhood and our attendees, more than 750 within six hours, who come from all over the Valley,” James said.
