60 SEPTEMBER 2019 By Kaylee McClaine The boys’ and girls’ swim teams at Arcadia High are keeping their sights on the water – and with incoming players and big goals ahead, they are ready to take on this season’s challenges. Swim Coach Erica McClurg hopes the boys’ team can have a strong dual meet season, as well as bring home some wins. Although the boys’ team is a young one this time around, there are quite a few strong swimmers expected to bring the team a few victories. Athletic Director Rudy Alvarado, who joined Arcadia High just two months ago, has high hopes for each team. “I have a couple of goals as it relates to my student-athletes. First, I want each student to compete to the best of their abilities. If we consistently give our best effort, both in practice and competitions, we become better swimmers and wins will follow,” said Alvarado. Ian Michelson, Chase An, Joe Loel and Grant Stoddard are a few names to watch out for. “There are a lot of swimmers this season which is great but it also makes it more challenging to get to really know everyone. I would love for the team to be really close and so far, it’s off to a great start,” said Ian. “My hope is that that continues and we can become even closer throughout this season.” Coach McClurg hopes that the girls’ team becomes one of the top teams at state this year. With roughly 70 competitors (for the boys’ and girls’ teams), victory doesn’t seem too out of reach for either team. Swimmer Sarah Harman already has a goal in mind. “This season, the girls’ team is working toward winning state for the second time in a row. Even though we are losing Sydney Carlson and Isabella Fratesi, who contributed a ton last year, we have a strong team with some great incoming swimmers. The boys’ team is also working to score higher this year,” said Sarah. The key swimmers on the girls’ team this season include juniors Kaela Schloz, Haley Chesno and Millie Sicko. Two incoming freshmen, Nora Sicko and Emily Dodd, will be added to the roster. “My goal is always to win state, like we did last year, and have fun while we do it. Our main strength would be how complete our team is. We are really close and love to compete. Every member of the team is extremely valuable, and we love all our Arcadia swimmers,” said Kaela. Both the boys’ and girls’ teams will take to the water against Sunnyslope on September 5.
