4 AUGUST 2019 I remember when I was younger, I couldn’t wait for school to start. The thought of being able to buy a new batch of school supplies, getting to meet new teachers and writing and rewriting my Spanish notes so that they looked perfect… man, those were the days! Since Arcadia’s schools are preparing to open their doors, it’s only fair we give a shout out to the Teachers We Love and the football teams that will be gracing local stadiums soon (page 52). My mind floods with nostalgia as I picture my best friend and I heading to the football game on Friday night to watch our team and brag about how late our curfew was. It was awesome to see our community rally around Coach Kerry Taylor so he and the football team can pursue another victorious season. I recently spent some time with the fastest female motorcycle racer in the world, Valerie Thompson, before she heads up to the Bonneville Salt Flats for this year’s Speed Week. She broke the world record for female racers when she hit 328 mph. I don’t know about you, but I get nervous when my speedometer hits 80. One thing is for sure, Valerie only knows one speed, and that is FAST. Read about it on page 32. This month kicks off our Teachers We Love campaign. If you have a teacher that deserves special recognition, recommend him or her by filling out a Teachers We Love form found on our website. We are always looking for local story ideas, so email editor@arcadianews.com and keep us in the know. Stay cool out there and thank you for reading Arcadia News ! — Mallory Gleich EDITOR’S NOTE At the end of the school year in May, Arcadia News held a luncheon at Postino Winecafé to honor the 2018-19 winners from the Teachers We Love program. Teachers We Love started in 2011 as a way for students and parents to honor a local teacher who made an impact on their or their child’s life. This year’s turnout was one for the books, with teachers from Hopi, Tavan, Christ Lutheran, Archway Veritas, St. Thomas the Apostle and Biltmore Prep coming together. A special shout out goes to Postino for hosting our event, and thank you to all of our teachers for making a difference in the community. Thank you, teachers! For nominating your favorite teachers each month during the school year. It’s an honor and a pleasure to recognize these hard-working educators with an article, and award them with special gifts from our sponsors. Schools and teachers are some of the greatest assets in our community. Since 2011, the Arcadia News Teachers We Love program has recognized over 65 local educators who have made an impact on their students and in the community. Its purpose is to give residents a chance to publicly thank a special teacher who makes a difference. Nomination forms are available at the Arcadia News website: arcadianews.com/teachers The Arcadia News thanks the sponsors of our Teachers We Love Program, who provide gift certificates for our winning teachers each month, and sponsor our end-of-year event.
