56 JUNE 2019 By Jennifer Marshall Although a major coaching change can dampen expectations for any team, this year’s Arcadia High Track and Field squads still produced memorable moments, including setting a new school record. The boys and girls of Arcadia Track entered the 2019 season with several program changes from 2018. Coach Jason Jones, who’s also a full-time teacher, was now running the entire program. There was a new long-distance running coach and new jump coaches. Despite the changes, Jones’ team was ready. “The season was successful in spite of going through a major leadership and coaching change,” Jones said. In addition to the Arcadia High staff, Jones gives credit to the steady influence of veteran staffer Samuel Fox – the girls’ coach – and Jan Ware, a longtime throwing coach of several state champions. “We’re thankful for the continuous support of Arcadia High and its administration. We’re thankful for coaches like Jan,” Jones said. While all the athletes worked hard and powered through this year of tremendous transition, several students stood out for their achievements. Junior Trevor Hook surprised everyone in the program this year by winning Arcadia’s division in the javelin throwing competition. “He went in as the lowest-seeded Division II javelin thrower and shocked everyone with his victory,” Jones said. “His throw was almost 10 feet longer than any other athlete. He won Division II.” Trevor’s final throw of 171 feet and 11 inches set a new Arcadia school record. Following his impressive showing, Trevor also earned the honor of representing Arcadia in the AIA Meet of Champions held at Arizona State University in mid-May. In the javelin event there, he placed in the top 10 out of 12 teams. “Trevor is the only Arcadia student who went to the AIA,” Jones said. “We’re absolutely thrilled with Trevor’s performance and his representation of Arcadia High School.” Other Arcadians also had some memorable performances this year. Senior Ben Waggener set the fourth fastest time ever at Arcadia in the 3,200-meter race with a time of 9 minutes, 52.74 seconds. He went on to place ninth in Regionals. Brooke Leber ranked in the Top 10 for the 200-meter dash, and even though she didn’t place at state, she performed well during the season. Arcadia’s girls 4X400 Relay team ranked fifth fastest in District II. “Given that 125 to 150 kids participate in track and field, it takes a community to make a program successful,” Jones said. “We’re thankful for the support of Arcadia High and its administration, and we’re especially thankful for coaches like Jan Ware.
