50 JUNE 2019 By Rachael Bouley As it has for each of the past 15 years, the Xavier College Preparatory Honor Choir attended the WorldStrides Heritage Festival this year. But unlike any previous trip, the girls’ efforts delivered all golds. The choir swept the festival awards for the first time ever, taking home 1st Place Gold in the Women’s Choir Division, the Adjudicator’s Award for a total score above 95 out of 100 and the overall 1st Place Gold Award out of 31 competing choirs. “It feels amazing to win all three awards,” said Xavier Choral Director Brittanie Hockins. “It’s something the Honor Choir has never done before and it’s a first I would love to repeat again.” WorldStrides Heritage Festival is held in multiple destinations across the country and globe every year, providing participants the chance to travel and give thrilling musical performances in front of nationally acclaimed judges. It provided a perfect opportunity for the Xavier Honor Choir to show off its skills and bond as a team. Under the leadership of Hockins, accompanied by Naoko Garrison, the choir thrived on and off the stage. family and this fantastic performance is something they will remember for years to come. “They’re all bright and talented young women and they do a little bit of everything, from sports and academics to music and theatre,” Hockins said. This group of young women who love to sing truly gave the competition their best More than 1,250 singers from Arizona, California, Utah and Washington competed during the event held in Anaheim, but Xavier used its experiences and feedback from previous years’ competitions to secure the sweep as the highest-scoring choir. Hockins, a Xavier alumna who still keeps in touch with her best friends from her school choir, said Xavier’s Honor Choir is like a shot, and it showed in the final standings. “It’s so difficult for a women’s choir to win an overall choral award because we do not have the male voices that make up the richness in the sound of a choir, but I am so proud that these young ladies accomplished this feat and they were able to show that they can sweep everything with determination, passion and practice,” Hockins said. PHOTOS COURTESY OF BRITTANIE HOCKINS By Miriam Cruson Echo Canyon School put on its inaugural Celebration of Excellence in May to celebrate students’ art and music projects while showcasing them to the community. Exposure to the arts has been shown to help develop creative problem-solving, critical thinking and communication skills, in addition to improving focus, discipline and self-esteem. Echo Canyon has fully embraced the importance of instilling a love of the arts in its students while also highlighting the students’ accomplishments throughout the year. The inspiration for the Celebration of Excellence was born from these goals. “We wanted to make it all-inclusive, including not only arts and science, but displaying all areas of excellence throughout the school,” Principal Kat Hughes said. Attendees of the Celebration of Excellence entered into a fine concert hall – which during the week is known as the cafeteria – filled with music performed by Echo Canyon’s bands and orchestras from the fourth and fifth grades as well as the middle school. The bands were headed by Conductor John Toerner and Maestro Carlie Smith. A myriad of projects from students greeted attendees in classrooms and other common areas throughout the campus. Echo Canyon’s staff embraces project- based learning. One of the key characteristics of this learning tool is to present and engage the students in real-world problems and carry that on to real-world applications. Project-based learning is a vital segment of STEM which focuses on the subjects of s cie nc e, t e ch nolog y, engineering and mathematics. STEM programs are designed in such a way to combine these subjects and how they can be applied to life beyond the classroom. “The projects were on display so that parents could enjoy the illumination of student learning in our inter-disciplinary units for this school year,” Hughes said. The Art Gallery Walk was guided by the expert hand of art teacher Yvonne White. Throughout the gym, students’ masterpieces were on full display rivaling any great art museum across the world – at least in the eyes of adoring parents. Each student was given the opportunity to choose something that they created this school year to be put out for the masses to admire. Parents were given the opportunity to purchase their child’s ar t work. Canvas masterpieces were framed, and the ceramic pieces created during their 3D design lesson were given their own art stand to be displayed in their homes. The success of the evening only solidified what will be an annual tradition at Echo Canyon for years to come.
