26 JUNE 2019 Ingleside’s Vocal Ensemble impressed the judges so much that they were awarded the top spot for April’s Noon Salute Contest. By Cody Kennedy Eight years ago, Fulton Homes was looking for a way to spread a little patriotism to its customers. The company partnered with 94.5 KOOL FM and came up with the Noon Salute Contest, which offers school music programs a chance to show off their skills by recording their performance of the Star-Spangled Banner to be played on the radio. In April, Ingleside Middle School’s Vocal Ensemble (ICE) earned that honor. Elementary and high schools are invited to record their strings, band and choir groups singing the anthem and send a copy to the radio station. From there, winners are chosen and their renditions are played on the station. “We are very honored and excited to be winners in this contest,” said Ingleside Choir Director Sammy Brauer. In fact, KOOL FM plays the National Anthem for its listeners every day; the Noon Salute promotion runs from August until May. Schools from around the Valley are able to play their version of the National Anthem for a specified month. Ingleside was the top submission for the month of April and was awarded a $1,000 donation to its music department from Fulton Homes. In early May, Charlie Huero of KOOL came to Ingleside and presented the music program with its winnings. He explained a bit about the contest and what an accomplishment it was to win. “The Vocal Ensemble was thrilled that they won. At first, they didn’t quite understand how competitive it was. Now that they have won, they get it,” Brauer said. “It’s an awesome feeling,” said eighth grader Merrick McRoberts. “We started practicing for this at the beginning of the year. At first, I was kind of nervous with being filmed, but then it didn’t bother me so much,” said eighth grader Faith Loar. As of right now, the group plans on saving the prize money and possibly using it for next year’s chorale trip to California, although Faith and Merrick would like to use it for the end-of-the-year party or to plan something “really fun” for the group.
