The brainchild of Hartley Rodie and his business partner, Kell Duncan, The Churchill is an innovative shopping and dining destination – innovative in the way of construction, as the center is fashioned out of 20 shipping containers. The Churchill opened in September 2018 and houses 10 businesses. “My partner and I shared a common vision for creating a community gathering place,” Rodie said. “Our goal was to create a space to bring affordable opportunities to small business owners.” Since community connection is fundamental to their business mission, Rodie and Duncan ask that each business complete monthly community service and participate in fundraisers for worthy causes. Every Saturday, a different tenant leads a group of people in a “community cleanup.” “I feel like The Churchill in Roosevelt Row really gives Phoenix that first sense of cultural identity,” Rodie said, “which is why I feel like both the community and local businesses are rallying around it.” The Churchill’s design spans a large courtyard that functions as an area for live music, classes, wellness events and other types of speakers, programs and artists. In fact, The Churchill is a work of art in and of itself. “We were looking to build density onto a small parcel of land,” Rodie said, “and the shipping containers were perfect. Owner and head winemaker Maynard Keenan of Caduceus Cellars and Merkin Vineyards in Northern Arizona opened Merkin Vineyards Old Town in early March. Keenan, of musical fame with bands Tool and A Perfect Circle, also has a vineyard in Cottonwood that opened in November 2016, but he’s been on the winery scene since his 2004 launch of Caduceus Cellars. ROCK AND ROLL The Vig Arcadia and Eric Brown of Launch Real Estate will be holding a mini- concert on May 18 from 2 – 5 p.m. Nate Nathan & The MacDaddy-O’s Band will rock the stage to support the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society’s Team in Training bike ride in Lake Tahoe later this year, which Brown will be participating in as team captain.
