42 APRIL 2019 By Rachael Bouley It’s time to get outside and enjoy everything that our neighborhood and the Valley have to offer. There’s plenty of activities the whole family will love, so start checking these off your list and cherish the memories and mild weather while it lasts, because those summer temperatures will be here soon. ART SHOWS With an average of 300 sunny days a year, Phoenix is the perfect place for outdoor art displays. It’s great for kids to get out and about and see some of the sculptures, murals and interactive art features throughout Arcadia and closer to downtown Phoenix, too. Check out the Art in the Garden events on page 30 for starters. NATURE WALKS One of the best things about Arizona is the variety of native animals and plants that make their home here in the desert. Children love the chance to explore and may even spot some animals and flowers. The Desert Botanical Garden and the Phoenix Zoo are two great places for little ones to learn about the world around them. HIGH SCHOOL SPORTS With several high schools in the area, including Arcadia High, Brophy, Coronado, Xavier and Veritas, there are a lot of student sports teams to cheer on. It’s the season for baseball, softball, golf, lacrosse and track and field, so there are a lot of options to choose from. BACKYARD GAMES You don’t have to leave your yard to have a good time outside. There are many games you can play in the comfort of your own backyard, especially if you have young kids. Cornhole, ladder toss and giant Jenga are some family favorites you can set up outside. You can also bring the board games out for an afternoon of competition and bonding, or set up a sprinkler or slip ‘n’ slide during the hotter days. BASEBALL GAMES America’s favorite pastime is back. Catch a ballgame at Chase Field in downtown Phoenix, while the roof is still open, or support some of the local school teams or the talented young athletes in Arcadia Little League. BIKE RIDES There’s an abundance of great bike paths and trails in our area, and now is the ideal time to head out for a ride. Put your helmet on and go for a relaxing bike trip along the Phoenix Canal system, as you combine physical fitness with outdoor adventure. CONCERTS If you love live music, now’s the time to get out there and check out the variety of concerts at outdoor venues in the Valley. Pack a picnic and make it a memorable outing filled with music, entertainment and laughter. Fresh air fun: outdoor activities you can do this month Chase Field in downtown Phoenix.
