By Elaina Verhoff Two long-time traditional events in April share the same name, but fortunately not the same date. The first two weekends in April will host these outdoor, hands-on events that take advantage of the weather and the natural beauty of Arcadia. THE SHEMER Shemer Art in the Garden and Sparkling Tea will be held from 10 a.m. – 4 p.m. on Saturday, April 6 at Shemer Art Center, located at 5005 E. Camelback Road. Shonna James, the center’s director, says the event first started in the 1960s as a “studio clean-out sale” with 13 artists who were members of the Art in the Garden club. “It was first held in the backyard of Ruth Magadini, then moved to someone else’s house,” says James. “Finally, because one of the members taught at Shemer, they moved it to Shemer.” The Shemer event will showcase a variety of Arizona artists who create garden-related drawings, paintings, photography, ceramics, mosaics, glass, wood and metal. One of Shemer’s instructors will provide a backdrop of live jazz music, and demonstrations will feature artistic processes such as marbling on rice paper, adding florals to ceramics, creating watercolor florals, Ikebana, alcohol ink and mosaics. Black Cat Coffee House will be on-site with food and beverages. This year, a new addition is the ticketed Sparkling Tea event to be held on the back patio from 2 – 4 p.m., offering a high-tea menu from Scottsdale-based White Lion Tea Company. There will also be a competition for the most artistic garden hat. Admission for the Art in the Garden event is free. Admission to the Sparkling Tea is $50 per person. For more: shemerartcenter.org. BERRIDGE NURSERIES Berridge Nurseries will hold its 21st annual Art in the Garden event from 9 a.m. – 3 p.m. on Saturday, April 13 at 4647 E. Camelback Road. This neighborhood tradition makes full use of the lush nursery grounds at the base of Camelback Mountain, with an art show, farmers market, food trucks, and demonstrations in the outdoor amphitheater scattered among the vibrant plants and flowers. The event is free to the public. Christine Fortman, who co-owns Berridge Nurseries with her mother and sister, says this year’s Art in the Garden will feature a variety of artwork from local artists including everything from mixed media pieces and gourd art to handmade jewelry and windchimes. The farmers market will include locally sourced goods like pickles, honey, granola and chocolate. Two Valley food trucks, Chef Wade’s Mac and Cheese Truck and Luana’s Coffee, will be on-site for refreshments and lunch. “Art in the Garden is the springtime celebration the entire nursery looks forward to every year,” said Fortman. “My grandfather, Jim Berridge, started a legacy over 80 years ago here in Phoenix and with this legacy in mind, it brings us so much joy to host artists and entrepreneurs from all over Arizona and introduce them to our community.” Throughout the day, Art in the Garden will also treat guests to cooking demonstrations and samples from Steak 44, along with garden demonstrations from rose experts and gardeners in the nursery’s covered outdoor amphitheater.
