A recent AAA Travel survey revealed that nearly 100 million Americans – four in 10 U.S. adults – plan to take a family vacation this year. Two-thirds of travelers are planning a summer getaway, while just under half plan to travel during spring. Road trips remain a popular vacation option for families, with 53 percent of traveling families expecting to hit the highways this year. Hitting the road can be an economical way to vacation, according to recent survey data. Gas prices are averaging more than a quarter cheaper in 2019 when compared to the first few months of last year. These lower prices could mean a little extra time exploring – 33 percent of Americans say they would consider taking an extra vacation if prices remain low. Where are adventurous families heading this year? According to AAA’s travel editors, the most popular summer road trip destinations for 2019 include Las Vegas to National Parks; Northern California and the Southern Oregon Coast; Northern New England; Blue Ridge Parkway in North Carolina and Black Hills, South Dakota. Here are some guidelines for families headed out on a road trip: Prepare for summer adventures • Be prepared: Books, games and music can help entertain passengers. Keep healthy snacks on hand, especially if you can’t stop for a full meal. • Stay safe: Plan frequent stops – about every 100 miles or two hours – to rest and remain alert. All passengers should wear seat belts or be secured in a child safety seat. • Eliminate distractions: Pre-program your GPS device and adjust mirrors and seats before beginning to drive, and don’t use a handheld or hands-free cellphone while driving. • Practice patience: Busy roads are commonplace during the summer driving season. Leaving earlier in the day can help you avoid heavy traffic. • Research your destination: Map out your route in advance using AAA’s TripTik Travel Planner. A knowledgeable travel agent also can help you plan a stress-free vacation. 23 APRIL 2019 CLS celebrated its first Geography Bee win at the statewide competition at Valley Lutheran High. By Rachael Bouley Several Christ Lutheran students stood out recently in the Lutheran Schools’ Spelling and Geography Bees. Held in February, these events brought students from Lutheran schools to Valley Lutheran High School to compete on the big stage alongside their bright and determined peers. Christ Lutheran took first place in both the Geography Bee and the Jr. High Spelling Bee. CLS fifth grader Alexander Escobar was one of 10 students to compete in Christ Lutheran’s intra-school Geography Bee in November, winning a spot at the competition. Although this was his first year participating in the Geography Bee, Alexander enjoyed every minute of this journey and has big plans for his future after a fantastic finish. “The Geography Bee challenges me about the knowledge of the world,” Alexander said. “I want to compete and win the national Geography Bee competition. When I grow up, I would like to be a structural engineer and an archaeologist.” CLS sixth grader Christian Matt was mostly happy about the Geography Bee. “I was excited to win the Geo Bee because it was the first time CLS won it at Valley Lutheran High School,” Christian said. “I felt bad for the second-place team because they had to travel all the way back to Yuma.” It was also Christian’s first year competing, but that didn’t stop him from achieving great results alongside his fellow students. “I have always been fond of history which helps with map skills – and I studied the maps in my bedroom. I enjoyed the Geography Bee because I got to work with my team at CLS and bring back a trophy to the school.” The opportunity to work together as a team toward a common goal is beneficial for these students, and the school community came together to show its support and cheer them on. After such a successful run, the students plan to carry this momentum into next year as they prepare for future geography and spelling bees.
