60 MARCH 2019 By Anthony Wallace This year, Coach Troy Gerlach is instituting a new ritual he picked up from his time with the gold medal-winning USA 15U baseball team this past summer. After each practice, every team member takes off his shoes and scrubs them down. It’s a literal and metaphorical cleansing. “We’re scrubbing away what we did today,” Gerlach said. This is an important theme for this year’s Arcadia High School baseball team as it attempts to put a disappointing 2018 season in the past. After a highly successful 2017 season in which the Titans went all the way to the state semi-finals, expectations for last year’s team were high. Unfortunately, those went unfulfilled. The 2017 team, which went 22-10 overall, was led by 12 seniors who left a void upon g radu at i ng. Additional injuries made things worse and Gerlach found himself starting a number of inexperienced underclassmen, including three freshmen. The team finished 7-19 in 2018. Despite that record, Gerlach is proud of how his team handled the setbacks. “Our record didn’t show it, but we did a really good job last year. We improved. They got better,” Gerlach said. “Like I told them, ‘Life isn’t fair, there’s going to be adversity. Tough times don’t last, tough people do.’” Unlike last year, this year’s team returns a host of starters. The entire pitching staff returns as well as a number of position players. One of those returning pitchers, senior Jake Evans, says that this year already feels different than last. “As a team, we needed to improve our communication, culture and comradery,” Jake said. “There were a lot of freshmen last year and there was a separation. We know each other better now. It’s family this year.” Senior shortstop James Kent sees last season as a motivator. “We’re playing with a chip on our shoulder, playing with an edge, not letting what happened last year happen again,” James said. Poor fielding and a bad habit of leaving runners on base hurt the Titans last season. Gerlach sees these issues as directly related to the team’s inexperience and he expects both to be improved upon radically this season. Last season, the team committed 77 errors, an average of three per game. The young players will undoubtedly benefit from another year of growth and practice, but in addition to these more tangible improvements, Gerlach feels their experience last season has shifted his team’s mindset in a valuable way. “They’re not afraid to fail now,” Gerlach said. “You can’t be afraid to fail in baseball because you fail so often. That’s one thing I’ve seen, if I’m getting on them about something, they listen and then they move on. They’re not afraid.” Jake and James both expressed their gratitude for the lessons Gerlach has imparted on them. “He teaches us more than baseball,” James said. “He’s an inspiration. He’s taught us to be comfortable in uncomfortable situations.” These sound like players who have gained some wisdom and are poised to lead their team in a successful 2019.
