The scientific community once declared rubber useless because it was gummy in the summer, stiff in the winter, and it rapidly deteriorated. An average rubber tree ( ficus elastica ) yields 19 pounds of rubber latex annually. Rubber bands release heat energy when stretched, but absorb heat energy when retracted.
