Four Arizona wineries with tasting rooms in Old Town are working together to host a pedestrian adventure they call the Scottsdale Wine Trail. Wine may not come immediately to mind when thinking of our desert landscape and mountain backdrop. However, Arizona wine has been gaining popularity in recent years. The history of vineyards in the southwest reaches back to the 16th century when Spanish Jesuit priests brought the art of winemaking with them. The commercial side of Arizona winemaking really has taken hold within the last decade. As recent as 2006 there were only 12 licensed wineries in Arizona. That number has now grown to 90. In 2016, the Scottsdale Wine Trail was launched to help bring to light the flourishing wine industry here in Arizona. There are four participating Arizona wineries with tasting rooms located in the arts and entertainment district in Old Town Scottsdale. They include Aridus Wine Company, Carlson Creek Vineyard, LDV Winery and Salvatore Vineyards – Scottsdale. In the spirit of wine, often associated with relaxing and catching up with friends, these wineries each offer their own unique tastes and atmosphere. To begin this tasting adventure just stop in at any one of these four tasting rooms, all of which are within walking distance to each other, to purchase your Scottsdale Wine Trail Passport for $5. At each stop along your way you will receive a passport stamp. With that stamp, you will receive $2 off a 5-wine tasting at each location, which equals about one glass of wine. Once you collect all four stamps you can enter to win a Scottsdale Wine Trail prize, given out quarterly. You can complete your passport in one day or stretch out this unique experience over the weekend. The four wineries highlighted here all have their vineyards in southeastern Arizona. Due to its elevation, hot days, cool nights and rich minerals in the soil, southeastern Arizona provides an optimal environment for these thriving vineyards. SALVATORE VINEYARDS 7064 E. 5th Ave. PassionCellars.com Salvatore Vineyards and Passion Cellars have a strong love and thirst for Arizona wine. Their goal is to pass that on and share it with each and every visitor that comes into any one of their three tasting room locations. The wines showcased in the tasting room are the Salvatore brand, which was named after winemaker Jason Domanico’s grandfather. Their vineyard is located in Wilcox, where they also have a tasting room, along with one in Jerome. CARLSON CREEK VINEYARD 4142 N. It offers three tasting rooms throughout the state, in Wilcox, Cottonwood, and of course, Scottsdale. ARIDUS WINE COMPANY 7173 E. Main St. Ariduswineco.com Whether it’s the launch of its much-anticipated 2016 merlot or just a relaxing afternoon with friends, there is no shortage of atmosphere and award-winning wines here. Turkey Creek runs through its 40-acre vineyard in Wilcox, which also offers another tasting room near the base of the Chiricahua National Monument. LDV WINERY 7134 E. Stetson Dr. LDVWinery.com LDV Winery’s philosophy is expressed in their logo, which is three intertwined circles. The first circle represents the original farmers. The second represents the next generation of grape-growers, while the third is representative of grapes turning into wine.
