56 JANUARY 2019 The Arcadia lacrosse season starts in November and runs through early May. By Mallory Gleich Practices began in early November for the Arcadia Titan Lacrosse Club and youth programs, and the players and coaches are eager for the games to commence. The club, which is entering its sixth year, was originally started to develop the sport throughout the Camelback Corridor and Arcadia neighborhoods. Since the sport is not sanctioned by the AIA in Arizona, it is considered a club program and not an official school sport. Arcadia’s lacrosse team was established by Grant Loftin, an Arcadia graduate who now attends West Point. Grant worked with the AHS administration over the years to establish a lacrosse club at school. He got permission from former AHS Athletic Director Kevin Mooney to form a team that could practice on the AHS football field and wear the school name on the jersey. Coach Kyle Mason started playing lacrosse in sixth grade and still participates to this day. Mason is excited to continue being a part of the lacrosse family in Arcadia and help develop this season’s team. “My favorite part about coaching is watching players grow and develop as athletes, but more importantly as people,” Mason said. “Being able to watch a freshman athlete grow into a young man through sport is one of the most gratifying feelings in the world.” The Arcadia Lacrosse Youth Team will also start playing this month with a new coach, Aaron Frishkorn, at the helm. Before coaching in Arcadia, Frishkorn grew up playing lacrosse and coaching youth and high school lacrosse in Elizabethtown, Pennsylvania. “Learning and growing your skill of the game is important, but I think the skills that team sports instill in young athletes helps them succeed in life. As a coaching staff we focus on the philosophy where respect, hard work, and accountability are paramount in our success this season,” Frishkorn said. “This is all while respecting each other and opponents, working hard on and off the lacrosse field, and being accountable to the team and lacrosse-family that is Arcadia Lacrosse Club,” he added.
